• Thermopyles Hot Springs - Thermopylae translates to ‘Hot Gates,’ referring to the volcanic hot springs near this Greek town. Opposite the Leonidas of Sparta monument lies a volcanic area with several sulfur hot springs. Ancient Greeks believed these springs were a gateway to the Underworld (Hades). Greek mythology also mentions this place as where the hero Heracles cleansed himself of Hydra’s poison, turning the waters into hot springs.
• Great Meteoron Monastery - The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, or Megalo Meteoro, is a men’s monastery at Meteora’s highest point, 534 meters above sea level. It is the largest of the six active monasteries in Meteora, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1988. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios of Meteora, it flourished in the mid-16th century. The monastery sits atop Platys Lithos hill and is accessed via a ladder.
• Varlaam Monastery - Established in the early 16th century, the monastery is named after the ascetic Barlaam, who settled on the rock in the 14th century. It is renowned for its significant archive. The brothers Nektarios and Theophanis, known as the Apsarades from Epirus, organized the monastery in the early 16th century. In 1518, they renovated the Three Hierarchs chapel, originally built by Barlaam. The brizon tower was constructed in 1536. The monastery saw economic and spiritual growth.
• Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas at Meteora - This monastery is notable for its design, adapted to the small plateau it occupies, with multiple floors. The lower floor houses the 14th-century chapel of Agios Antonios, featuring hagiography remnants, and a crypt. The second floor contains the catholicon, while the top floor includes the manor house (formerly a bank), the ossuary, and the chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos.
