Highlights
  • Akrotiri Archaeological Site - One of Greece’s most significant archaeological sites. This prehistoric town, established around 2000 BC, was buried under pumice and volcanic ash during a massive eruption in 1612-1613 BC. Often referred to as the Aegean Pompeii by archaeologists.
The ancient city of Akrotiri was the heart of a thriving civilization that peaked between 1550-1500 BC. It was inhabited from the Neolithic Age until 1500 BC, when a catastrophic eruption obliterated it. The city’s wealth and the quality of its houses reflect its prosperity and vibrant lifestyle. The advanced houses were spacious, multi-storied, constructed from stone and mud, and aligned with Cycladic architecture.

Akrotiri Excavations - don't miss it! - We loved this experience. Our guide at Akrotiri has been doing this for over 30 years and was so knowledgeable. She encouraged our questions and took her time guiding us through the excavations. It was so nice to be picked up at our hotel and return trip back. Our guide on the van was also very knowledgeable about the island of Santorini. This is a different view of Santorini and one we are glad we didn't miss (we didn't have enough time on our first visit 7 years ago). Such a part of history - you will be amazed and glad you saw it.

History and confusion. - The archaeological guide was very good and had in-depth information, but the bus guide didn't seem to know what was going on with who was being picked up. The tour company had booked two different tours on the one bus. One tour was just Akrotiri, and the other was a whole load of historical villages and a sunset in Oia. The tour guide was saying everything that was going to happen that day and a number of customers were getting confused as they had only booked the archaeological site. These customers had to explain to the guide these circumstances and needed to be transferred back to their pick up point. The tour guide was not happy about any of this and kept mentioning about having a positive attitude.

Anticipate Travel Time, but Good Tour for price - Here was our timeline: picked up at our hotel at 11:00, bus got to main pickup location at 11:30, after picking up more people we got to Akrotiri at 12:15, and stayed until 1:30. We then got back to our hotel in a reasonable amount of time after that. I’d say the travel time, especially there, was longer than we anticipated. The bus guide was very nice but it did seem like she was handling a lot of people’s different pickup and drop offs, which was the main drag on the tour progress. Our guide at Akrotiri, Penny, was great and we had a good amount of time to explore afterward.

Rip off - I was told where to go to be picked up for this tour. I waited over an hour and no one showed up. When I called the company, they said that the driver stopped at my location, but I wasn’t there, which is FALSE. He came back to pick me up and at this point I had waited an hour and 15 minutes. I did get to go to the excavation site, however, my tour ended up only lasting 50 minutes. This was a rip off. I did not get my moneys worth at all.
