Excellent - Just done the walking tour of Fira with wine tasting to finish. Very enjoyable. Knowledgeable, friendly and informal. Wine tasting at the end is a must do.

Busy and crowded - Don't get me wrong there are some lovely aspects to Fira but we preferred the beauty of Oia and the laid back vibe of Akrotiri. I wouldn't use Fira as a base, instead choose one of the other two (depending on whether you want lively or a retreat) and hire a car for a day and use Fira to look around for half a day. Fira, as the capital is cheaper than Oia but a little rougher aroung the edges, it is also ridiculously busy and crowded. This being said, there are great views to be had and there would be plenty to do at night here.
