However, Thiruchendur is an exception, with its Raja Gopuram located on the western side. The reason for this deviation is believed to be the proximity of the sea to the east. According to legend, when the child Arumuga matured into a youth, Lord Shiva commanded him to vanquish Surapadma and liberate the Devas from their harsh enslavement. Lord Muruga arrived at Tiruchendur with his vast forces and established his base. He dispatched his deputy, Veerabahu, to the asuras to negotiate the release of the Devas. Surapadma, however, rejected the proposal, leading to a battle.
