Highlights

Tirana - Our journey towards the Albanian Alps begins at 06:00 am in the morning. Our tour leader will come and pick you up at your hotel in Tirana
Shkoder - As we drive along the way towards Northern Albania, you will be amazed by beautiful landscapes; wild fields, rivers, Shkodra Lake and rugged untouched mountains. From Shkoder we will experience local transport riding at around 7:30 am.
Qafë thore - As we take the turn from the main road to Theth the area becomes more rural, with fewer cars but more wild nature and amazing landscapes. Due to its favorable position this area is famous for cultivating medicinal herbs, and if you are lucky to travel in May – June you would be amazed by the pretty and aromatic fields of lavender, making you feel like you are in Provence (France). On the way to the top, we will pass through a steep sneaky hillside reaching up to 1700 meters above sea level at Qafa e Thores. They say this is the spot with the best picture – perfect view of the Albanian Alps.
Theth National Park - After arriving in Theth we will visit the Old Church and the “Lock in” Tower (symbol of Theth). The stories behind these buildings take up centuries full of history.
Blue Eye of Theth - We will have a short break for refreshment and start our hiking journey towards the Blue Eye at around mid-day. Blue Eye was formed by the erosion of the water from the melting snow of the Albanian Alps. The hike is about 3 hours one way, with a hiking distance of 6.2 km both ways and about 700 m of elevation. This trail is considered easy to moderate, requiring some experience in hiking. You will not be able to take your eyes off this stunning scene of nature with its bright blue and green colours, it’s like being inside a postcard. Also, fun fact, the temperature of the Blue Eye is just around 5 degrees Celsius. Would you dare to dive in the blue but very cold water?
Grunasi Waterfall - On the way back to Theth, for the ones who have still energy to hike, we can also visit Grunas Waterfall (about 1-hour hike) from Theth. Grunas Waterfall is a curtain of white water that comes over the grey rocks as if it were being poured from a bucket that never empties. The water tumbles down the hillside in a series of mini-waterfalls.
Shkoder - We will go back to the village center and here we drive back to Shkoder
Tirana - We will go back to the village center and here we drive back to Shkoder. This marks the end of this amazing hiking experience.

Amazing experience - Loved the landscapes and the opportunity to see so much of Albania. The guides made sure we were safe and comfortable. They provided lots of useful information about places and culture in the country. Thet and Blue Eye are breathtaking, totally worth the long drive!

A fulfilling day trip - The team at Choose Balkans kept in touch with us right from the moment we booked the tour to the day of our tour and answered all our questions promptly. 10/10 tour & 11/10 tour guide - From London to Tirana, mid November. Our group (5) booked a full day tour and we were extremely happy with both our tour and our guide, Rennato. The 6am start was a stretch for us, but from the offset Rennato made us feel so comfortable and the coffee stop ensured we stayed awake! From start to finish he was both professional - very informative with local & historical knowledge, and friendly - taking lovely photos for us as a group and had a great sense of humour which really fitted in with our group! Would 10/10 recommend this tour & 11/10 recommend Rennato if he is available! We would love to come back to Albania and explore more but we felt this tour sampled so much for our short stay. Our tour included stops in/through Shkoder, the alps, Theth and Qafë thore. This time of year we saw some exceptional views (we even had snow at the peak of the Albanian Alp mountains whilst enjoying a hot beverage with at Buni i Bajraktarit) and we thoroughly enjoyed the stunning seasonal colours of Autumn through the hike to the Grunasi Theth Waterfall (due to a prior booking we skipped the hike to the Blue Eye). The scenery & food at the lunch stop was incredible - and due to the time of year we had no over crowding either.

Amazing trip! - I would recommend this to anyone who loves hiking and nature! All the spots were so amazing, and the autumn colors of the leaves were so beautiful. Renato was my tour guide and he was so great and knew a lot about the history of the places we went. Definitely recommend this if you’re traveling in Albania!!
