- Skanderbeg Square - Our adventure begins at the vibrant heart of Tirana, Skanderbeg Square. This central plaza, spanning 40,000 square meters, is surrounded by iconic landmarks like the National History Museum, Opera House, and National Bank. The square is named after Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, and features his impressive 11-meter-tall statue. The square’s eclectic mix of architecture showcases Tirana’s diverse history, from Ottoman-era structures to Fascist and Communist influences, creating a fascinating backdrop for our exploration.
- Clock Tower - You won’t believe that this was Tirana’s tallest building until 1970! The Clock Tower has been a city landmark and a symbol of Tirana’s development. Right next to it, we have the statue of Skanderbeg, and we’ll talk a little more about his remarkable history.
- BunkArt 2 - we will then pass by Bunk’Art 2 which is housed in a former nuclear bunker built during the communist era in Albania. It was designed to protect government officials in the event of a nuclear attack.
- Enver Hoxha Pyramid - Next, we delve into the intriguing history of the Enver Hoxha Pyramid. Originally built as a museum dedicated to the former communist leader, it has now been repurposed into a modern cultural and innovation hub, reflecting Albania’s dynamic evolution. We can choose to Climb on top for an amazing view of the city
- Grand Park (Parku i Madh) - We then escape to the serene Grand Park of Tirana, an expansive green space in the heart of the city. This park, with its picturesque artificial lake created in 1955, offers us a peaceful retreat. Designed by architect Valentina Pistoli, it features memorials, an amphitheater, and Tirana’s only zoo. Covering over 1.5 million square meters, the park is a haven of biodiversity and a vital part of the city’s landscape.
- ILY Coffee - Sometimes, we like to catch some shade and recharge during an optional coffee break where you can relax, and soak in the local atmosphere.
- Postbllok - Checkpoint Monument - At this tour stop, we’ll encounter a striking piece of history: a section of the Berlin Wall right here in Tirana. This formidable fragment, once a barrier that brutally divided East and West Berlin, now stands as a poignant symbol of freedom and the end of the Cold War. Gifted to the Albanian people by the German government, it serves as a powerful reminder of the relentless human spirit, the importance of unity, and the ultimate triumph of democracy over oppression.
Nearby, we will also visit Postbllok Checkpoint. This intriguing monument is a chilling reminder of Albania’s communist past. It features concrete pillars from a labor camp, a bunker typical of the era, and a mine shaft from the infamous Spac labor camp. Postbllok was installed to commemorate the victims of the communist regime and to educate visitors about the harsh realities of that time. It stands as a testament to the resilience of those who suffered and a stark reminder of the importance of freedom and human rights.
- Mother Teresa Square - Did you know that Mother Teresa is albanian born ?! The Mother Teresa Square (Albanian: Sheshi Nënë Tereza) is the second largest square in Tirana, Albania. It is named after the Albanian-born Indian Roman Catholic nun, missionary and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Teresa.
