Highlights
  • Tirana - If you want to get a taste of the authentic local culture instead of visiting the standard tourist attractions in Tirana, the best thing to do is to jump into this day tour. We will start our excellent walking tour at our Office where you will meet with your local companion. You will have an insight into the hidden alleyways and bustling street markets of Tirana, where dozens of street hawkers sell fresh vegetables and fruits. After walking through the busy streets, we will try Byrek at a small local place that only locals know how to find. The famous traditional Albanian food is dough with all kinds of filling such as cheese, meat or spinach. Have breakfast like a local by pairing it with the traditional Albanian drink “Dhalle”.
  • Tregu Cameria - Next, we will walk towards Çam bazaar, founded by the Albanian Çam community, who originally came from an area called Çameria in today’s North-western Greece. Here you can buy all kinds of goods from clothes to kitchen equipment and bargain with the sellers for a cheaper price.
  • Rruga Qemal Stafa - On our way to the next bazaar, we will stroll around and discover the city’s neighbourhoods and hidden gems. You will be able to absorb the local vibes by visiting the so called Bicycle bazaar, where you can find everything, from second hand clothes to second hand furniture.
  • Pazari i Ri - The tour will continue towards new bazaar, located in the most colourful area of Tirana. You will get to know the city and its local people through getting to know the local cuisine during lunch time. We will try the traditional Qofte (small pieces of meat filled with spices), fried potatoes, fresh bread and traditional sauce. There are also vegetarian options for the ones who do not eat meat. To end this tour in the best way, we will try some Albanian Raki as well. As we Albanians say, there is nothing that Raki can’t fix

Additional Information

To experience authentic local culture rather than the usual tourist spots in Tirana, consider partaking in this day trip. It will provide a glimpse of the concealed lanes and vibrant street markets of Tirana, filled with numerous vendors selling fresh produce. After weaving through the bustling streets, we’ll sample Byrek at a small, off-the-beaten-path locale only known to locals. Become acquainted with the city and its inhabitants by exploring local culinary delights during lunch. We’ll indulge in traditional Qofte (meat morsels filled with spices), fried potatoes, fresh bread, and a customary sauce. To conclude this journey in the most enjoyable manner, we’ll sample some Albanian Raki too. As the local saying goes, no problem is too big for Raki to solve!

  • Tips are not a must in Albania or the Balkans, however, our recommendation is to tip the tour leader/driver as an international practice to tip good service

Enjoying tastes of Tirana on foot - We were fortunate enough to be the only guests so we ended up having a private tour with Ardit around Tirana. He was excellent and took a great pleasure in sharing extensive Albanian history with us while we walked throughout the city, and ate plenty along the way. Highly recommend this tour, especially early in your trip, to have local cuisine and get a sense for historical landmarks that you wouldn’t get on your own.

A delicious time - A pleasant way to sample Albanian food whilst increasing your step count. Genti passionately narrates Albanian history and offers sensational restaurant recommendations.

Essential start to Tirana - We had a great tour and enjoyed Fabio's excellent rundown on the history and makeup of Tirana and Albania as a whole as much as the sights and tastes of the city. A great (essential) introduction to Albania from 1200 to present and therefore recommended.

Great tour from a local - Good tour for getting your base in Tirana, would recommend you do this on your first day as you will then know all the key spots and foods / drinks to try for the rest of your trip. Anan was very helpful and answered all our questions. She even arranged a taxi for us post tour so we could visit the cable car.

Highly Recommendable - We thoroughly enjoyed this food tour. Our tour guide Gentjan was very knowledgeable about Georgian culture and cuisine and went over and above to give us the perfect tour. We tasted some delicious food we would probably not have chosen but for this tour. Would highly recommend, definitely one of the highpoints of our trip to Tirana.

Fantastic food and great guide - Fantastic walking tour of Tirana with Genti, our guide. He was so enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the history and culture of the city and country. Also a great guy! I would highly recommend the tour but also to do it on the first day of your trip - you end up with loads of yummy food that you need time to eat! We tried a lot of foods we wouldn’t have tried had we not gone in the tour. Choose Balkans tour company were easy to deal with and very friendly.

An interesting way to see the city and experience the food and drink. - The best part was just wandering the city and exploring the food with our guide and another guest. We found that we were not very fond of Albanian food, but glad to have experienced it all. The only negative was that the agency doing the tour had recently moved, and even though they were in contact with us by Whatsapp in advance of the tour, they did not mention that they had moved and while we did manage to connect with the guide, it would have helped if the agency had sent us the new location.

Brikena was a very nice... - Brikena was a very nice tourguide. She told us a lot of the cities history. The food was nice, but not that special. An Apple and a Tangerine, that can't be counted as an fooditem in a tour like this. For being a food tour, it should have had only 2 or maybe 3 stars. But because of the citytrip and help for getting a table at a nice restaurant that evening it gets 4 stars.
