Duration: 2 hours, 30 minutes

Highlights
  • House of Soviets - The main route showcases the best modern highlights and Soviet remnants of Tiraspol. It’s not a rigid itinerary; we have the freedom to choose our destinations and activities. There’s enough to explore for a two-day tour, so no matter how much I share or how quickly I speak, it will only scratch the surface. But we’ll delve as deeply as possible. Peek behind the iron curtain and discover Pridnestrovie, the most fascinating relic of the USSR.
  • The Christmas Cathedral - Optional detour to the back of the 100 rouble note.
  • The Suvorov Monument - Since 1972, Generalissimo Alexander Suvorov has stood in Tiraspol’s central square, regarded as the city’s founder. No spoilers here; more intriguing history awaits during the tour!
  • Green Market Center - and the surprisingly modern veggie market!
  • Palacio Presidencial - A Soviet-era government building with Comrade Lenin in front. You can find it on the back of the fifty rouble note—Transnistrian roubles, of course.
  • The Tank Monument - A real combat tank that symbolizes many significant themes, from war and peace to darkness and light. It’s the famous T-34. We’ll also stroll to the riverbank for a lovely view from the bridge.
  • Kvint - Optional tour inside the Kvint factory, no tastings included.
  • Mig-19 Monument - This aviator memorial in Balka district commemorates thirty years of victory in the Great Patriotic War. I haven’t listed all the hidden gems between these attractions, but they add a unique touch to make the tour truly unforgettable and contrasting! I highly recommend the brutal tour—some of the abandoned places here are more impressive than Chernobyl. My wife believes no one should visit Chernobyl, but every traveler I meet either just came from there or is heading there next. Fortunately, there’s no radiation here, just the aftermath of the USSR’s collapse. We have the option to explore eerie abandoned sites from a bygone era that will captivate fans of Tarkovsky’s films or post-apocalyptic movies. It’s a way to experience an ‘exclusion zone’ without the radiation risk or the crowds you’ll find in Chernobyl. I can’t reveal these places here, but adventurers, take note—this is a tour of a lifetime!
  • Tiraspol - Are you planning a trip to Transnistria, the country that doesn’t exist? Spoiler alert: Transnistria really doesn’t exist! The real name of the country is Pridnestrovie, or if you prefer, the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic! Dig into the history, or better yet, visit in person! Beyond borders, restrictions, and propaganda, welcome to Pridnestrovie, where we make cognac, not war!

  • Opportunity to experience an authentic USSR trolley bus.
  • Commemorative postcard provided.

Additional Information

I create postcards featuring my drawings and offer budget tours to the top attractions and hidden gems of Pridnestrovie. You can either transfer from Chisinau or start in Tiraspol. While I can’t turn my country into the Maldives, I can provide an unforgettable journey through its contrasts—beautiful panoramas, impressive Soviet relics, intriguing history, and contemporary life in a country that officially doesn’t exist. The tour combines classic walks with adventures for true explorers and adventurers.

The tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours. It’s not rigid; we’re flexible about where to go and what to do. The default route includes must-see USSR-era and modern sights in Tiraspol, along with my favorite nooks and crannies discovered while sketching. The trip is neither exhausting nor boring, and we’ll have plenty of time to discuss the unique past and present of Transnistria, also known as Pridnestrovie ☭. You won’t just meet a guide; you’ll meet a friend!

  • Anton Dendemarchenko -
  • Sightseeing walk is perfect and transparent for all genders and ages. Optional foray may be challenge - climbing a talk or tasting kvas. But it is not obligatory experiences.
  • There are two versions of the tour - real and virtual. I would recommend to go in real life, border is open!

Transnistria: Highlight of the region - I love the passion, pride and love Anton has for his country. Lovely spirit made the trip funny and delightful :) Transnistria is literally like most people who visit it say: it’s a time-travel capsule that gets you to see relics of the Soviet time that the Transnistrian long for. We had a great time with Dima the driver who picked us up from Chisinau and took us to see highlights and pretty architecture and scenery of the land.

The most meaningful experience - Where should I begin... This was by far one of the most personal, meaningful, and impactful tours I have ever been on in my life. Every information Anton gave us had numerous personal background stories of himself and others from the area, of the past and the present, and it was such a privilege for us to have Anton share the rich history and the lives of people there with us. It really opened my mind to many aspects I wouldn't have if I hadn't been on this tour, and the entire tour was a deeply philosophical and eye-opening experience for me. Anton took us to places only a local would know of and we really appreciated that as well. Beyond the tour, we also really enjoyed the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the city where it was completely safe. If you're wondering about exploring Tiraspol and to really immerse yourself into the reality beyond what is portrayed in the media, 120% recommend taking Anton's tour! Not a tour of sights, a tour of culture - This is no ordinary tour, where the guide shows you sights and rattles off dates and figures which you can google yourself. Anton Dendemarchenko takes you behind the curtain to discover just what it means to live in transnistria, both now and in the time of the Soviet Union. If you want a real tour with a real local and to discover the real culture of this country that “doesn’t exist”, look no further than a tour with Anton.

Fantastic Soviet adventure - Where to start? We met Anton at a soviet cafe in Tiraspol, and we set off to see the various sights. Throughout the tour, Anton was extremely knowledgeable and engaging, drawing in personal experiences, family experiences, and some experiences from passersby. Issues surrounding his legitimate/illegitimate status gave us an insight into his very REAL life as a Pridnestrovian. Some of the tour included walking and also some travel by car (accompanied by a soviet playlist!) which was a necessity as some sights were too far to go by foot. Anton is an extremely passionate Pridnestrovian and a great ambassador for their people. This tour is a must if you visit Tiraspol. The country (regardless of government advice) is as safe as any Western country and you won't face any difficulty at the border. Anton provided some homemade souvenirs for purchase at the end which was a great addition and dropped us back at a central location not far from the bus station. A great tour by all accounts! The flame still burns in this country from the past. ☭

The best tour I had in a while! - Anton really portrays well this country and it’s the most local tour you could get! He’s very passionate about his work and showing you the real side of Transnistria. I got to talk to locals, visit a library, drink homemade wine, eat in a Soviet canteen, try his mum’s cookies and see the best secret view of Tiraspol! It’s not a typical tour you might find somewhere else, it’s a tour where you get the needed information and so much more. Definitely recommended! 🥰

Excellent insight in a very strange place - Anton was our guide for 2 1/2 hours of city tour in Tiraspol, and had we had the time, we could easily have spent more of it with him. He is an excellent guide and may give you a lot of insight into this very strange place that is Transnistria and its capital, Tiraspol. Without a guide, you won't understand much, so if you go, do book him. And yes, you should go and stay a few days, as we did. Transnistria is not dangerous, but safe and friendly with surprisingly good restaurants, a . Anton may help with transfer from Chisinau. Go visit this backwater leftover from the dissolution of the Soviet Union that turned out to be much more interesting than expected.

Really incredible tour! You will not be disappointed! - This is an absolutely fantastic tour! I could not rate it more highly , 10/10 ! Anton the guide is the absolute best! He gave us such a memorable experience we will never forget. He not only told us all the fascinating history of this incredible country but also he gave us a rare and valuable insight into local life and culture. We visited all the key sites and felt truly immersed in this fascinating place. The tour was really well organised and arranging things with Anton was super easy and simple. He was on hand to help us with all our random questions and to assist with how to get there and what to do after. He has a great energy and is so enthusiastic and passionate it made us vert excited and to have a really enjoyable day. This is a MUST SEE activity if you are visiting Tiraspol . No need to be worried or scared, this is a very safe and charming country , full of amazing friendly, warm and lovely people. We found this city to be far more beautiful and interesting than Chisnau ! I recommend to only spend one day in Chisnau but to spend at least 3 days or 1 week in Transnistria, there is so much on offer , not only in the capital city but all over the country. Anton can also arrange tours for you around the south of the country where you can see even more if it’s interesting and unique history and culture. Highly recommend this tour and this guide.

Great experience, safe and flexible drive, friendly and personalized tour - I decided to visit Tiraspol and Transnistria as I was visiting Moldova and could not miss this chance. My overall interaction with Anton was amazing. He is a very nice person, kind, and also a very hardworking father. I would rate this trip as 5/5 in terms of safety, sightseeing, flexibility, and information provided. I was picked up from in front of my hotel in Chisinau and brought back safely by Dima. Dima did not speak any English, but he had amazing driving skills, was very flexible with any stop requests, the car was clean, and it was a fun ride. Dima took me to the stadium as well, and he had the patience to stop at each Soviet bus station I asked to take a photo of a mosaic. We passed the border quite quickly, and soon we were in Tiraspol, where I met Anton. I got to explore Tiraspol with Anton as a one-on-one tour and felt spoiled. Anton had a lot of stories to tell, a lot of history to share in an engaging way next to each monument, but also, we were limited in time, so he adjusted accordingly to my expectations. It did feel a bit chaotic at certain moments, but Anton adjusting to what I wanted to see and where I wanted to go, all this while we had a chat like old friends, made it worth it. Considering the group side, the logistics, and organization, maybe this could have been done cheaper, but having a local person that wants to share about their country and life there, taking you around and interacting with locals, I would say it's worth the money. In the end, Anton prepared a small collection of souvenirs for me, highly appreciated that he is being creative about his work. Would I go again? Yes. I would consider it a good price for this tour in terms of safety and comfort by Western standards.
