Situated roughly 15 kilometers away from its closest resort town, Tissamaharama, Bundala National Park acquired the status of a biosphere reserve from UNESCO in 2005. It’s also a RAMSAR wetland, serving as a haven for various species of migratory water birds in Sri Lanka. The park is notably visited by the large flocks of Greater Flamingos who populate the area in their thousands, creating a loud but fascinating display of feeding activity, and coating the primary lagoon of Bundala with a sheer pinkish hue—a mesmerising spectacle. The park houses five brackish lagoons, with Bundala enjoying the highest recognition as the prime elephant-watching spot, especially at the nearby water body, ‘Kokara’. But a note of caution—these elephants might exhibit signs of aggression, a result of human-elephant conflicts in the region. Bundala is also a rich reservoir of various plant species as well as being a habitat for a variety of mammals, reptiles and butterflies.
