Yala National Park spans a vast area along the South Eastern shoreline of Sri Lanka, stretching from Okanda to Hambantota. The region’s history dates back several centuries, with references to its abandonment three centuries earlier due to ‘unhealthy conditions’ as noted by the 16th-century Spanish mapmaker Cipriano Sanchez. The reason for this abandonment could have been the marshlands and perilous wildlife that led to incurable diseases at the time. Subsequently, during British colonial rule in 1900, the Yala area was declared a Forest Reserve. Within this reserve, a section was designated as a hunting ground exclusively for local sportsmen. It wasn’t until 1938 that Yala was officially established as a National Park by law.
