Imperial “Getaway Home” - It would be a pity to miss this glimpse of a great emperor’s idea of a getaway second home. About a half hour drive from Rome near Tivoli brings you to almost 250 acres of at least thirty monumental structures built a century or so AD by the great builder Emperor Hadrian as his personal getaway habitat from the headaches of Rome. The UNESCO heritage-ranked incredible ruins of palaces, thermal baths, articial lake, theaters, residences, galleries, a hospital, libraries, sculptures, colonnades, gardens, pools and water features, etc. display the superb architectural styles and engineering genius of Greece, Egypt and Rome in service to a sophisticated emperor’s full-court festive and celebratory relaxation complex for himself, family, friends and troops. A proper viewing requires at least a half day of meandering through the vast open ruins and is best visited in spring or fall when the heat is least prostrative. The site is open daily at 8:15. am with longer open hours from March through September and is advisably visited weekdays in the early morning to avoid the crowds and heat. Entry fee last known to be €12.
