Great Kyrgyzstan experience - We had an amazing experience. Kyrgyzstan is such a beautiful country with beautiful people. I couldn’t recommend this tour enough. Too many things to highlight but the best are the people we‘ve met and experienced the tour with. Definitely one of the highlights of our year.

The best tour you can choose - The tour was amazing and well organised. Every detail was as described and we had a wonderful time. All the guides where extremely nice and caring, while they explained everything to us. Accommodations were excellent and very nice. I would do it all over again.

Amazing country and guides, problematic food and water hygiene - I took a 19 day trekking tour of NW and SE Kyrgyzstan with a group of 12 people from our local outdoor club in July of 2024. We trekked in the Ala Kul mountains, in the Alai mountains, and in the Pamirs to Lenin basecamp. We had an AMAZING time, with top-notch guides and mostly excellent logistics support from the Visit Alay team. The company has set up yurt camps and guest houses at convenient locations all around the Alai Mountains trek, which made that trek particularly amazing because of the opportunity to stay in remote yurt camps and guest houses with a local family at a great location relative to the day's trekking. All of the guest house and yurt camp staffs were incredible, preparing widely varied meals and responding to all of our dietary preferences. We had excellent side tours including an eagle hunting demonstration, a yurt-building demonstration, and a felt-making class - all highly recommended. We have just a few suggestions for improvements. * CBT (Community Based Trekking) is the logistics partner for the Ala Kul trek. We had packed based on Visit Alay's instructions, but when we got to the first camp on the trek we discovered that CBT had rearranged gear between our trekking bags without telling us or our guide, and the number of porters was cut back without asking us or our guide. As a result, it was very stressful to rearrange everything in a big hurry, and the porters ended up carrying enormous loads. After the fact we found that our gear had been dropped on the ground during the rearranging and we had dirt all over our stuff (recognizing that the dirt was thoroughly mixed with animal dung, which meant that our hands and tents would have dung on them, contributing to GI illness). * Everyone in our group got significant GI illness during the first two treks, and particularly on the Alai trek. Multiple people were seriously incapacitated, including two who had to go to the hospital for dehydration near the end, and multiple people had to ride the emergency horses. We think that this came from a number of causes: ** Dung on our hands and gear from the ground, without hand sanitizer on the tables to clean up before dinner. Hand wash stations were provided but they were filled with river water which was likely to be contaminated too. ** Outhouses became very difficult to keep clean once everyone had diarrhea. ** Hygiene practices were not sufficient to assure water and food were not contaminated with bacteria that our western systems are not used to (even though all the families were VERY service-oriented and served amazing meals!). Fresh cheeses and yogurt were served which obviously would have had local bacterial cultures and we shouldn't have eaten it. Fresh fruits and vegetables may have been washed in unboiled water, we couldn't tell, but a fresh carrot salad did seem to contribute to illness. Shared dishes encouraged passing germs around. The way these camps were staffed (with just one, max two women running the whole production along with taking care of kids), it would have been hard for all dishes to be washed in boiled water and all fresh foods to be washed in boiled water before serving. Each yurt camp and guest house was run by a different family which makes it much more difficult to establish western-style hygiene practices. We faced the same challenges on past treks in Peru, but on those treks we had just one support team controlling food and water at every camp, and once we had implemented these practices in partnership with our outfitter, no one got sick. Lenin basecamp was an amazing experience, but they didn't have nearly enough outhouses for the number of people staying there, and all the outhouses were overflowing when we arrived. Hand wash stations were out of soap and sometimes water, and who knows if the water had been boiled anyway. Go to Kyrgyzstan - you will love it for incredible scenery and authentic local culture! And you won't find an outfitter better than Visit Alay.
