Delightful Small Town with History - Our two-day stay in Tomar was a delight. Narrow cobblestone streets filled with history, from the Convention de Cristo, former headquarters of the Knights of the Templar, a fort overlooking and protecting the town, and a beautifully painted chapel; the second oldest synagogue in Portugal; ex Ellenton restaurants, and much more.

A little gem. Not only Convent of Christ - Beautiful town in the central part of Portugal. Everyone stops there to visit the wonderful Convent of Christ, but it deserves more than a day of visit. It has a small old town that is a gem and is surrounded by a park and a really suggestive waterway. We only stayed one day but I think we will return to visit it.

Amazing family experience. - Amazing place, set in beautiful grounds with far reaching views. Parking nearby entrance. Lots of steps within castle walls but we'll worth the effort, especially taking the fascinating spiral staircase up to the battlements. Beautiful azulejos, architecture, chapel, monks cells, very interesting. Video presentation explaining history in multi languages. Cafe and shop on site. Very reasonable entrance fee, would recommend at least 2 hours for visit.

A taste of Portugal past & present - Tomar is where you will find one of the last bastions of the Knight's Templar and keep your camera at the ready. The ancient buildings are marvelous and stunning. We then ate at the most quaint little restaurant we've ever been to. Almost our entire tour group ended up there, 2 x 2, 4 & 6. The owner had to send her daughter out to the market 3 times as it wasn't high season and they were pleasantly surprised to have almost all of our group of 26. There is a picture of the restaurant's card below. You can find plenty of pictures of Tomar on the net. The food at this little restaurant was scrumptious and the owner insisted that we all share a shot of Portuguese Ginja, a home brew of cherry brandy that you will no doubt come to taste even if you don't leave the airport. She somehow thought that we had brought everyone in, which, as each group passed and they saw familiar faces and came in, was not entirely right or wrong. 5* for the little wine bar that could!
