Tomar was a prominent city on the Iberian Peninsula throughout the 13th Century. It’s famed for its Convento of Christ, initially the primary fortification of the Knight Templars, later handed over to the Order of Christ. A visit to the Convento of Christ reveals a blend of Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance architectural styles, with special focus on the Church (Ambulatory), which references Jerusalem through its historic structures. The city offers a distinctive panorama with the Nabão river, its historic core, enchanting gardens and traditional houses. The 15th century-built synagogue of Tomar, or Jewish Temple, is highly recommended for visitors.

Another key site is the Almourol castle, positioned atop a gigantic granite island in the Tagus river. Visitors can take pleasure in a small boat ride to the castle, savouring the riverfront and the vistas along the way.
