A Romantic Stroll Through History
Tomar, a city steeped in history and romance, offers the perfect backdrop for a Valentine’s Day weekend getaway. As you wander through its cobblestone streets, the air is filled with stories of the past, whispering tales of the Knights Templar and their legendary exploits. The weather may be cool and overcast, but that only adds to the city’s mysterious charm, making it an ideal setting for couples seeking a unique and intimate experience.
Start your journey with the Tomar and Coimbra Tour, available from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM on both days. This private tour takes you on a historical adventure, exploring the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Convent is a masterpiece of architectural styles, from Romanesque to Baroque, and its Manueline Window of the Chapter Room is a sight to behold. As you walk hand in hand through the cloisters, imagine the lives of the Templars who once called this place home.
A recent review from June 2024 captures the essence of this tour:
The best day, with a fantastic host - James was an outstanding tour guide who deviated from the Coimbra itinerary to give our daughter (a scholar of ancient Rome) a tour of the amazing ruins of a Roman city in nearby Conimbra. The city was occupied in the 100s and the mosaics are fantastic, as is the museum. Our first stop in Tomar was equally wonderful, as we toured the romantic castle headquarters of the Knights Templar (circa 1100) and the baroque convent within its walls. Again, we loved James.
Exploring the Mysteries of the Templars
For those intrigued by the enigmatic history of the Knights Templar, the Knights Templar Tour is a must. Available on February 8th from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, this tour delves into the secrets of the Templars, visiting the Almourol Castle, perched on a small island in the Tagus River. The castle’s remote location and storied past make it a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and romantics alike.
The tour also includes a visit to the Convent of Christ, where you’ll learn about the transition from the Templars to the Order of Christ. The guides are known for their engaging storytelling, as highlighted in a review from October 2024:
Templar history - Excellent tour with a knowledgeable and friendly guide, learned a lot about its history and the Templars, will recommend this tour to all my friends and family.
As you explore these historic sites, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details and imagine the lives of those who once walked these halls. The cool, cloudy weather adds a layer of mystique, making it feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.
