Elafonissi is a location safeguarded under the “Natura 2000” initiative. This island is abundant with dunes dotted with sand lilies and junipers, trees similar to cedars. It serves as a nesting ground for the at-risk Caretta-Caretta turtles and several unique animals, making it unlawful to disrupt or remove any plant or animal life from the vicinity. The exotic beaches with their white sands and clear turquoise waters evoke images of the Caribbean and are situated on both sides of the peninsula. The sand in several areas has a pink tint due to the thousands of crushed shells mixed in. Near the peninsula’s extremity where it begins to fray, the water depth doesn’t go beyond 1 meter, forming a tiny lagoon perfect for children. You can quickly navigate across the lagoon to get to the ‘island’, with your belongings, as the waters there stay shallow. The beach’s eastern portion, situated opposite the lagoon, is well-equipped and tends to be more populous. Facilities like umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, snack bars, and changing rooms are readily available. The travel website TripAdvisor recognizes Elafonissi as the 11th top beach globally.
