Toronto is not what it first appears. Look below the surface, and you will see buried waterways, ancient cliffs, the world’s largest ravine system, and centuries of waterfront transformations. Hidden Rivers Tours is led by a professional historian and is the only tour company in Toronto dedicated to sharing these subterranean stories.

The tour lasts 3 hours. Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the tour’s start time. We begin right on time.

This is a three-hour walking tour up and down many hills. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, apply sunscreen, and hydrate. There will a stop en-route to purchase snacks and use the washroom.

At the end of the tour, you are encouraged to tip your guide. The price you pay on TripAdvisor is a booking fee, not the actual price of this pay-what-you-can tour.

  • This is a pay-what-you-can tour. You pay on TripAdvisor to book your spot, and tip your guide at the end. Most guests tip between $20-$40.

Fun, laid back experience - My childhood, next door neighbor lives in Hamilton. We were in Toronto for vacation and we decided to meet up at this tour. It is a short hike with lots of information. Having never been to Hamilton before it was a really pretty hike with tree coverage for 90% of the hike. It’s a good hike for all levels.

You want to know more than most guide books then join Mathew on his walking tours every summer - Mathew clearly loves his city to want to know more than what is obvious. Walking with him means going back in time, not just hundreds of years but also recent history like Bay subway station (on Bloor that everyone coming to Toronto will visit at least once) has two levels, the lower now permanently closed and all you get is a peek through closed doors unless you are part of a film crew, or guest at a wedding or rave because it can be rented, the only condition being you must have very deep billionaire pockets.

Not your average tour guide. - I've done two of Matthew's walking tours around Toronto and thoroughly enjoyed them. Matthew is super upbeat and has a plethora of information and fun facts about the city of Toronto. If you enjoy walking, meeting new people, and soaking up some new information about this amazing city we live in, I highly recommend Matthew's tours.

Great tour - Fabulous tour. I've lived in Toronto all my life and have never walked through the ravine and experienced Toronto that way. Your enthusiasm for what you do makes the walk that much more special!

Explore your city from an entirely different lense - Matthew was our tour guide on The City Beneath Toronto tour. He is an amazing tour guide - anyone can start a tour company, few can be truly be passionate about Toronto (and it's rivers and ravines) in the way Matthew is. I would probably keep an eye on his website and take more tours this summer and in the future!

A Must Do! - Matthew is a knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging tour guide! I feel like I learned a lot, and it was good exercise! This is one of my favourite things I’ve done in Toronto in the 3 years I’ve lived in the city. Would recommend this tour! Especially good for solo travellers! 10/10
