Recognized as one of the finest vineyards in Traverse City, visitors can enjoy some of the best red and white wines on the peninsula. Red wine enthusiasts can try the Merlot/Cab Franc blend, while white wine lovers can sample the Auxerrois or Dry Riesling. Guests can also enjoy a popcorn flight and a charcuterie board. This is one of the newest and most promising wineries on Old Mission Peninsula.
Hawthorne Vineyards is perhaps the most secluded tasting room on Old Mission Peninsula. The tasting room is situated on a high bluff, offering views of both East and West Grand Traverse Bays. Visitors will be surrounded by nature—no traffic, no close neighbors—just vineyards, woods, and water.
Guests can enjoy views of both bays from the tasting room. An outdoor patio area provides a relaxing environment with breathtaking bay views and a cozy outdoor fireplace.
- Bonobo Winery - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
A place where guests feel like celebrities, with wines you’ll be eager to boast about and share. Bonobo Winery was established by brothers and longtime Traverse City residents, Todd and Carter Oosterhouse. It offers stunning views, excellent wines, and exceptional customer service!
Tour participants can sample expert-level red wines like the BDX and a premium Pinot Noir. White wine enthusiasts can try a sparkling Blanc de Blancs, top-quality Chardonnays, and a Fume Blanc. This is the only winery on Old Mission Peninsula where tour guests can enjoy a glass of whiskey! Frozen drink fans can indulge in a frozen lemonade lavender vodka-based drink. Guests can also savor delicious pretzel bites, a gourmet charcuterie board, or fried goat cheese (food availability may vary). This winery is one of the most unforgettable stops on the wine tour—it’s truly an experience.
- Old Mission - Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, or bottles.
OLD MISSION DISTILLING
Tour guests will be warmly welcomed to Old Mission Distilling, nestled in the heart of the picturesque Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City. Guests can sample one of the newest trendy spots on Old Mission Peninsula and purchase mixed drinks and wine.
At Old Mission Distilling, the team believes that the essence of a spirit lies in its ingredients. Tour guests will learn that ingredients are locally sourced, drawing from the rich farms and orchards that grace the peninsula. From the lush orchards bursting with sun-ripened fruits to the fertile fields yielding high-quality grains, the staff brings the essence of Old Mission Peninsula into every bottle.
Tour guests will be impressed by the selection of unique mixed drinks, wines, food, and even a mixed drink flight, all available for purchase.
- Bowers Harbor Vineyards - This is a seasonal stop-ALTERNATE STOP
Tour participants can purchase flights, wine by the glass, bottles, or join the wine club during the tour.
Established in 1991, Bowers Harbor Vineyards is one of the original wineries in the area. Initially a horse farm, the estate now boasts 20 acres of vinifera vines. The inviting tasting room, a former horse stable, is staffed by friendly individuals who will introduce tour guests to an extensive selection of top wines by the glass, bottle, or flight.
Bowers Harbor Vineyards is affectionately known as the “dog winery,” and guests may encounter various dogs at the winery.
Bowers Harbor cultivates Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The standout is the Pinot Secco (bubbly Pinot Grigio) and a Pinot Secco Rose (Magic Mike’s pick).
Guests can order wine flights and relax on the patio, by the fire pit, in the pavilion, or at tables nestled alongside the vines on the property.
- Grand Traverse Bay - Grand Traverse Bay is an extension of Lake Michigan. The bay is separated from the rest of Lake Michigan by the Leelanau Peninsula. It stretches approximately 32 miles long, ranges from 7 to 10 miles wide, and reaches depths of up to 620 feet in certain areas. It is the second-largest bay of Lake Michigan, following Green Bay.
Grand Traverse Bay received its name from 18th-century French voyageurs who made “la grande traverse,” or a long trek or crossing, across the bay’s mouth.
The most notable feature of Grand Traverse Bay is its division into East and West arms by the Old Mission Peninsula.
During this tour, as guests travel from Traverse City to Hawthorne Vineyards, they will enjoy stunning views of the East Bay. The tour route includes driving along the shoreline at times. On the journey from Hawthorne to Bowers, guests will see views of the West Bay. Throughout the tour, guests will experience views of both East and West Bays. The breathtaking views are a significant highlight of this award-winning tour!
