Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve - Ile aux Aigrettes stands as a testament of the efforts made over the years by the Mauritian Wildlife Fund for the preservation of
Mauritius’ endemic fauna and flora. The natural reserve
to be a part of the Mauritian Wildlife Fund’s conservation efforts. The nature reserve, located approximately 800 meters off the mainland’s shore, flourishes with dense vegetation characteristic of Mauritius’ coastal regions.
Guests are escorted by knowledgeable guides on a 90-minute journey through an ebony forest, once the habitat of the extinct dodo bird, as well as a plant nursery housing thousands of young seedlings, the remnants of an old limekiln, and a breathtaking panorama of Mahebourg Bay. Most notably, visitors may encounter indigenous wildlife such as the Mauritian gecko, the Pink Pigeon, the endangered Telfair skink, and the giant Aldabra tortoise, which has been introduced as a surrogate for the two native species of land tortoise that are no longer in existence. With some luck, one might also spot the Mauritian Kestrel, which has been brought back from the brink of extinction and now freely roams the island’s woodlands.
