We set off from Bucharest in the morning and head towards the Bulgarian border, reaching the city of Ruse. Here, we cross the Danube River and, after around one and a half hours, we reach the Basarbovo Monastery. This is a Bulgarian-Orthodox cave monastery that was established during the era of the Second Bulgarian Empire. We then journey on to the renowned city of Veliko Tarnovo, which boasts a history that spans over five thousand years. Our primary destination here is the Tsaravets Palace, which was the royal dwelling for Bulgarian rulers between 1185 and 1393. The palace was erected over the remnants of a Byzantine city. After exploring this exquisite location, we’ll wander around the city’s ancient streets before enjoying a traditional lunch.
