Setting Sail from Cat Ba Island

As a seasoned traveler with a penchant for the open road, I found myself yearning for a new kind of adventure. The allure of Lan Ha Bay, with its promise of less crowded waters and breathtaking landscapes, was too tempting to resist. My husband and I packed our bags, leaving our trusty RV behind, and set off for Cat Ba Island, the starting point of our two-day journey.

The moment we boarded the small junk boat, I was transported back to the days of my youth, when my family and I would embark on road trips across the vast American Midwest. The sense of freedom and exploration was palpable as we cruised past the floating fishing villages, their colorful boats bobbing gently in the water. Our guide, Hang, was a delightful presence, his voice carrying over the waves as he shared stories of the bay’s rich history and vibrant ecosystem.

The weather was a mild 19 degrees, but the warmth of the sun breaking through the clouds made it feel much warmer. As we sailed further into the bay, the landscape unfolded like a painting, with towering limestone karsts rising majestically from the emerald waters. It was a scene that rivaled any of the scenic routes I’ve traversed in my lifetime.

Kayaking Through Hidden Lagoons

Our first day was filled with adventure as we took to the water in kayaks, paddling through rock arches and into hidden lagoons. In the stillness of the lagoon, we paused to listen to the symphony of nature—the gentle lapping of water against the kayak, the rustle of leaves, and the melodic calls of birds.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the bay, we returned to the boat for a delicious dinner. The meal was a feast for the senses, with dishes that celebrated the flavors of Vietnam. From tender steamed fish to grilled mussels and vegetarian options like tofu with tomatoes, each bite was a reminder of the culinary delights that await those who venture off the beaten path.

A Night Under the Stars

That night, we anchored in a secluded pocket lagoon, the boat gently swaying with the tide. The sky was a canvas of stars, reminiscent of the nights spent camping under the vast expanse of the American sky. There was an option for squid fishing, but I chose instead to sit on the deck, wrapped in a blanket, and reflect on the day’s adventures.

The following morning, we continued our exploration of Ha Long Bay, visiting Dau Be Island and kayaking through the enchanting Ho Ba Ham cave. The beauty of the limestone islands, untouched by the throngs of tourists, was a testament to the magic that can be found when one takes the road less traveled.

As we made our way back to Cat Ba Town, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences that travel has afforded me. This journey through Lan Ha Bay was a reminder of the wonders that await those who are willing to explore beyond the familiar.
