Family Adventures on the Camino: A Journey from Tui to Santiago
Embarking on the historic Camino de Santiago with my children promised an adventure filled with learning and bonding. Our journey from Tui to Santiago de Compostela was a blend of history, nature, and family connection.
Setting Off on the Camino
As a family travel writer, I am always on the lookout for experiences that can be both educational and enjoyable for my children. The Camino de Santiago, a historic pilgrimage route, seemed like the perfect blend of adventure and learning. So, with backpacks filled and spirits high, we set off from Tui, a charming town that marks the beginning of the Portuguese Way.
Tui welcomed us with its rich history and stunning architecture. The kids were fascinated by the Tui Cathedral, a magnificent structure that dates back to the 12th century. We spent our first night in Tui, soaking in the atmosphere and preparing for the journey ahead. The excitement was palpable as we anticipated the days of walking, exploring, and bonding as a family.
The first stage of our trek took us from Tui to O Porriño, a manageable 18.7 km walk. The path was lined with lush greenery, and the kids enjoyed spotting various birds and plants along the way. We took breaks to admire the scenery and chat with fellow pilgrims, each with their own unique story. Arriving in O Porriño, we were greeted by the charming pedestrian area and the impressive City Hall building, a testament to the town’s architectural heritage.
Embracing the Journey
The following days were a delightful blend of walking, learning, and connecting with the local culture. From O Porriño, we made our way to Redondela and then to Pontevedra, each stage offering its own unique experiences. In Pontevedra, we explored the historic center, a pedestrian-friendly area filled with quaint shops and cafes. The kids were particularly taken with the local pastries, a sweet reward after a day of walking.
One of the highlights of our journey was the stop in Caldas de Reis, known for its thermal waters. After several days on the road, the opportunity to soak in the revitalizing waters was a welcome treat. The kids loved the idea of “magic water” that could wash away their tiredness, and it certainly did wonders for our weary feet.
As we continued towards Padrón, the legend of the Apostle Santiago added a layer of intrigue to our adventure. The kids were captivated by the stories of the Apostle’s disciples and their journey, making the trek not just a physical challenge but a historical exploration as well.
Reaching Santiago de Compostela
The final stretch from Padrón to Santiago de Compostela was both exhilarating and bittersweet. The anticipation of reaching our destination was mixed with the realization that our journey was coming to an end. As we approached Santiago, the sight of the cathedral’s spires in the distance filled us with a sense of accomplishment and awe.
Arriving in Santiago de Compostela was a moment of triumph. The Plaza del Obradoiro, bustling with pilgrims from all over the world, was a sight to behold. We took time to explore the cathedral and the surrounding Old Town, each corner steeped in history and culture. The kids were thrilled to receive their “Compostela,” a certificate of completion, a tangible reminder of their achievement.
Our 8-day trek from Tui to Santiago was more than just a walk; it was a journey of discovery, bonding, and growth. The Camino de Santiago offered us a chance to step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse ourselves in a world of history, nature, and community. For families seeking a meaningful adventure, this trek is an unforgettable experience that will leave you with cherished memories and a deeper connection to each other and the world around you.
