Birding in Yucatan and Oaxaca - We did 2 birding tours, one in Yucatan with Miguel and one in Oaxaca with Edgar. Both guides were fantastic birders and super nice guys. Highly recommend!

Good tour visiting different spots for different birds - Miguel was a professional and enthusiastic birding guide who really knew his birds, where to look for them and was good company too. We really appreciated stopping at spots along the road or in villages that you wouldn't normally do on your own to see different species. Recommended.

Muyil Birding 11th August 2022 - Good trip all round, punctual pick -up at 05:30, quick stop for coffee before arriving at Muyil. Birded the local gardens and jungle around the community. Good selection of species on offer , almost every bush had a bird in . Species seen included Spot-breasted Wren, Black-cowled Oriole, Yucatan Woodpecker, Rose-throated Becard, Cinnamon-bellied Saltator, Pale-billed Woodpecker, Piratic Flycatcher, Red-legged Honeycreeper, White-bellied Emerald, Scaled Pigeon, Brown and. Green Jay, you really could spend hours here. A short stop for refreshments and then entered the ruins. Birding here a lot more difficult in dense vegetation. However the guide , Claudio, seemed to have x-ray vision ! .Species here included several trogon’s, several woodcreepers , Bat Falcon, Squirrel Cuckoo, Masked Tityra, Bright-rumpled Atilla, American Pygmy Kingfisher and various tanagers , flycatchers and more. A very successful trip, highly recommended for hardcore birders.

Incredible Birding with Miguel - We signed up for a private bird tour of Sian Ka'an and Muyil via Mexico Kan Tours. Miguel was our tour guide and he. was. awesome. He picked us up from our hotel in Tulum (note: if you have your own car, you can meet him at the reserve and it'll knock some money off your cost) and drove down to the site, sharing coffee, bananas and homemade cookies once we parked. The first half of the tour was in Muyil, a community across the street from the reserve. Amazingly, we saw more than 50 species in just a few hours. After a delicious lunch at a restaurant near where the car was parked, we snagged another two-dozen species in the reserve. Overall, we saw 47 lifers in just a half-day's worth of birding. Miguel was friendly, communicative, helpful and incredibly knowledgeable about birds. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

Great guided tour - My guide Miguel Amar Uribe, he was very knowledgable not just about the wildlife but also the area as well as the Mayan history. Miguel is very personable, easy to speak with and has a great deal of knowledge. Anyone that is lucky enough to use him as a guide will not regret it. Gracias Miguel, hasta la próxima

Reenchanted with birds, nature, and culture - I had an unforgettable and enchanting day of birding guided by the great maestro Miguel Amar. We birded from sunrise to sundown, seeing over seventy bird species across three different sites of diverse habitats, beginning with the lake and woodland edges at Cobá (Pueblo) moving to the beautiful rain forest of Cobá and Punta Laguna; and also swam in a reinvigorating cenote, appreciated the archaeological richness of Cobá, considered the spider monkeys of Punta Laguna, lunched with a local Mayan family and witnessed first-hand their extraordinary conservation efforts, all while keeping a sharp eye and ear out for birds. This immersive and varied trip truly has everything! Since this was a customized private tour, Miguel worked with me to plan an itinerary that best suited my interests and time, which meant going to Cobá-Punta Laguna instead of Muyil-Sian Ka'an. This was my second birdwatching tour with Mexico Can Tours. The first, a week prior, was the Sian Ka'an Muyil tour with a small group (also enthusiastically recommended). My partner and I had such an incredible experience on that first trip I was lucky and privileged enough to reserve this longer, private tour for myself--with a different itinerary customized to see a greater variety of birds and habitats. Don't hesitate to personalize your trip to your liking and experience level, especially for the private tour. It was worth every peso/penny. I would highly recommend adding the guided visit to Cobá, which allowed me to experience one of the less frequently visited Mayan ruins within driving distance of Tulum and, just outside the archaeological site, also glimpse the bird life around one of the few natural lakes in the region. And if you can, do yourself a favor and cool off in a cenote. Birds seen on this trip included: Northern Jacana, Tricolored Heron, Little Blue Heron, Ringed King Fisher, and Ruddy Crake, Ridgeway’s Swallows, Brown, Green, and Yucatan Jays, Yellow-winged Tanager, Groove-billed Ani, Yellow-faced Grassquit, Green-backed Sparrow, and Spot-breasted Wren at Cobá Puebla around lake and wooded edges; Black-headed and Gartered Trogon, Squirrel Cuckoo, Yellow-throated Euphonia, Turquoise-browed Motmot, Black-cowled and Orange Oriole, Yellow-green Vireo, Yellow-olive, Boat-billed, Social, Sulphur-bellied Flycatchers, and Clay-colored Thrush at archaeological site of Coba, the list goes on… I should note that this was my first time visiting Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula, and that I embarrassingly know next to nada Spanish. Miguel then was not only a guide to and interpreter of the region's abundance of birds, he was also a translator of its diverse culture, history, and language. I would not have seen all the amazing birds we saw, would not have gone to all the unique places we visited, and would not have enjoyed the hospitality of people we met, if not for the exceptional knowledge, experience, and intention of a guide like Miguel. It is clear Miguel takes delight and care in what he does, and I am sure that is the case with the other tour guides. Yes, I ended up adding over sixty new bird species to my life list, but the real gift was a re-enchantment with birds, nature, and culture—feeling re-connected to place, learning how to see and listen all over again.
