Exploring Yucatan’s Treasures: A Family Adventure to Chichen Itza and Beyond
When I heard about the Chichen Itza Day Trip from Tulum, I knew it was a must-try. The allure of ancient ruins, a cenote swim, and local cuisine all in one day was irresistible. Here’s how our family adventure unfolded.
A Journey Through Time and Nature
As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that can captivate both adults and children alike. When I heard about the Chichen Itza Day Trip from Tulum, I knew it was something I had to try. The promise of exploring ancient ruins, swimming in a cenote, and tasting local cuisine all in one day was too tempting to resist.
Our adventure began with an early morning pick-up from Tulum. The air-conditioned coach bus was a welcome sight, especially with three kids in tow. The journey to our first stop was filled with fascinating stories of Mayan history, thanks to our engaging tour guide. The kids were enthralled, and I found myself learning new things about the Yucatan Peninsula.
Our first stop was a shopping area that supports local schools. While some might find the sales pitches a bit much, I appreciated the opportunity to support the community. We even had the chance to be blessed by a Shaman, a unique experience that added a spiritual touch to our day. The Mayan-inspired buffet that followed was a hit with everyone, especially the chicken, which was so delicious we all went back for seconds.
Discovering the Wonders of Chichen Itza
Next, we headed to the highlight of the trip: Chichen Itza. As we approached the iconic Pyramid of Kukulcan, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. Our small group was led by a knowledgeable guide who brought the history of the site to life with humor and insight. The kids were particularly fascinated by the stories of the Temple of Warriors and the Great Ball Court.
Despite the heat, the experience was nothing short of magical. The reduced capacity due to COVID-19 meant we could explore the ruins without the usual crowds, allowing us to capture stunning photos with no one else in the background. I can’t stress enough the importance of wearing a hat and staying hydrated, as the Yucatan sun is relentless.
The time at Chichen Itza flew by, and before we knew it, we were back on the bus, heading to our next destination. The tour provided bottled water, which was a thoughtful touch, ensuring we stayed refreshed throughout the day.
A Refreshing Dip and a Charming Town
Our next stop was the cenote, a natural swimming hole that felt like something out of a dream. The turquoise waters were incredibly inviting, and the kids couldn’t wait to jump in. The mandatory life jacket rental was a small price to pay for the peace of mind it provided. Floating in the cool water was the perfect way to unwind after the heat of Chichen Itza.
After our swim, we were treated to a sample of a local alcoholic beverage, a nice touch for the adults in the group. The final stop of the day was the charming town of Valladolid. With its vibrant streets and delicious street food, it was the perfect way to end our adventure. We indulged in elotes and churros, savoring every bite as we explored the town.
As we boarded the bus for the journey back to Tulum, the tour provided Tecate beers, creating a relaxed and social atmosphere. The kids were exhausted but happy, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the memories we had made. This day trip was a whirlwind of culture, history, and fun, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience the best of the Yucatan in a single day.
