Knowledgeable Guides and Fun Activities - We had so much fun going on our private tour of the Tulum ruins and the cenotes. Our tour guide, Rudy, knew so much about the Mayans and the buildings. We even learned a little bit of the Mayan language from him! First, he took us to a nearby gift shop where we could support the local craftspeople and pay our respects to the indigenous culture (a Mayan shaman blessed us so that we were welcome in the ruins). At Tulum, Rudy taught us about the purpose of each of the temples and houses, the artwork that can still be seen, and took excellent pictures of us in front of the views. Next, we visited the cenotes. Rudy held onto our personal belongings while we jumped from the various ledges into the beautiful cenote water. It was nice and shady here, so you don't have to worry about putting sunscreen on (in fact, sunscreen is discouraged because it's bad for the cenote water). We especially loved swimming through the cave cenotes, which were beautiful and refreshing. The turtles at Akumal were probably our least favorite of the three activities we experienced, but perhaps that's simply because we've swam with turtles before. This area was very crowded, and Rudy procured a different tour guide for us here. This guide didn't really wait for us very well (he had fins on and we didn't), and sometimes he would find a turtle, only for the creature to be gone by the time we caught up to him. Because it was very crowded, the water was really cloudy, and it was difficult to see the wildlife. There was a small coral reef we passed at one point that had lots of interesting fish we would have loved to observe, but because we had to stick close to our tour guide who was already swimming away, we couldn't stay and explore. At the end, this guide asked for a tip, and we awkwardly explained that our wallets were in the car. When he suggested he follow us to the car, Rudy saved the day and offered to give the guide a small tip for us since he had some cash on him. (What a great guy, that Rudy!) One last thing to know: you can't wear sunscreen at Akumal in order to protect the turtles. This is great for environmentalism! Just remember to bring long-sleeved swim wear if you burn easily. You also need to bring $12 per person in cash (government environmental tax). In summary, if you had to choose one thing to skip in your day trip, I would pick Akumal. There are other, less crowded opportunities to swim with turtles around the world. But there is only one Tulum in the world, and these cenotes were one-of-a-kind. Don't miss out on those! After the turtles, Rudy took us to the most amazing taco street vendor we have ever experienced. Taco Loco was right downtown by 5th Avenue of Cancun, and had very kind service. Because food was included in our package, Rudy took care of paying for everything. If you like experiencing real local food, definitely request going to a place like this. At the end of the day (which ended up being a long day - 8:30AM to about 5:00PM), we made sure to give Rudy and our driver a large tip for the wonderful, personalized service they provided us, especially considering the relatively low price for the whole package (less than $400 total). We wanted to make sure our guides were compensated fairly. If you're looking for some interesting activities to do in Cancun, definitely go with Coba Sunset and ask for Rudy. He's the best!
