The old medina of Tunis was in an oval shape, surrounded by a continuous wall and dominated by a Kasbah, seat of the government. It is built around the religious center of the great Ezzaitouna mosque, opening onto a large esplanade serving both as a market, as a place for public meetings and as a place for military parades, in the vicinity of which the Souks of the merchants were organized.
