Riding the Rapids: A Day on Costa Rica’s Pacuare River
When the call of the river beckoned, I couldn’t resist the allure of the Pacuare River in Turrialba. Known for its breathtaking beauty and thrilling rapids, this adventure promised a day of excitement and discovery. Join me as I recount my unforgettable experience with Ticos River Adventures.
A Warm Welcome in Turrialba
The sun was just beginning to rise over the lush Costa Rican landscape as my wife and I arrived in Turrialba, ready for a day of adventure on the Pacuare River. Known for its stunning beauty and thrilling rapids, the Pacuare had been on our bucket list for quite some time. As seasoned surfers, we’re no strangers to the water, but the idea of navigating a river was a new and exciting challenge.
We were greeted warmly by Roberto and his team at Ticos River Adventures, a family-run company with decades of experience. Roberto’s genuine hospitality was evident as he went out of his way to ensure our day would be seamless. He even offered to arrange a secure spot for our car further down the road, saving us precious travel time after the rafting. It was a thoughtful gesture that set the tone for the day.
Embracing the Rapids
With the sun climbing higher, we reached the launch site and met our guide, whose enthusiasm was infectious. His humor and clear instructions made us feel at ease as we embarked on our journey down the river. The rapids were exhilarating, each one a new thrill that left us craving more. Our guide’s expertise was evident as he balanced safety with excitement, ensuring we embraced the full experience.
Alongside us was a safety kayaker, a young man learning the river’s nuances. His presence added an extra layer of security, and his skill was impressive. As we navigated the rapids, the beauty of the surrounding rainforest enveloped us, a reminder of why we love this nomadic lifestyle. The river’s roar was a symphony, a natural soundtrack to our adventure.
A Riverside Feast and a Bittersweet Ending
Midway through our journey, we pulled over to a serene riverbank for lunch. Our guide and the safety kayaker prepared a delicious meal, a feast that fueled us for the remainder of the trip. It was a moment of camaraderie, sharing stories and laughter as we soaked in the sun.
As the day drew to a close, the safety kayaker revealed a collection of photos and videos he’d captured throughout our adventure. His talent was undeniable, each image a vivid memory of our time on the river. However, the unexpected cost of $40 per group for the photos was a surprise, leaving us with mixed feelings. While the experience itself was priceless, the additional charge felt like a missed opportunity to enhance the overall package.
Despite this minor hiccup, our day on the Pacuare River was unforgettable. Ticos River Adventures delivered a top-notch experience, and we left with a newfound appreciation for the river’s power and beauty. As we continue our journey chasing waves and exploring new horizons, the Pacuare will remain a cherished memory, a testament to the thrill of embracing the unknown.
