- The Newcastle Town Wall - Newcastle once boasted the “largest and fairest” walls of any town in England. Hear tales of sieges, jousts and battles from our guide, including the deeds of the legendary “Hotspur”.
- Blackfriars Medieval Friary - Newcastle’s Black Friars began life as the home of the town’s Dominician Friars - supposedly “holy men” they soon amassed wealth and political power.
- Newcastle Cathedral - Once the largest of Newcastle’s four parish churches, today the city’s Cathedral, St Nicholas’ Church is a monument to the wealth and grandeur of Newcastle’s merchants.
- The Guildhall - Today’s “guildhall” stands on a site occupied since 1216 when the merchants of Newcastle first received a Royal Charter.
- Trinity House - The Guild of Masters and Mariners of Newcastle was founded in the Middle Ages and once controlled all shipping from Whitby to Berwick.
- Newcastle Castle - Newcastle Castle includes the two finest surviving medieval buildings in the city, the Black Gate and the iconic Castle Keep. Together they formed part of the royal castle that gave its name to the town. Our guide will introduce you to the Castle outside and you are then free to explore both buildings at your leisure after the end of your tour.

Join us for a tour around the fascinating remains of medieval Newcastle, including free entry to Newcastle Castle.
This tour will explore the medieval history of Newcastle which lies hidden behind the modern city.
One of our authentically costumed guides will take you from St Andrews, Newcastle’s oldest church, past the formidable town walls taking in Friaries, merchant houses, markets and guild headquarters, before finishing at the imposing Black Gate - the gatehouse of Newcastle’s Castle.
From here you will be free to explore the amazingly preserved remains of the Black Gate and Castle Keep for yourselves - tickets are included in the price of the tour.

Go the gate of St Andrew's Churchyard and a guide will meet you there. They will be dressed in medieval clothing so should be easy to spot!

Great walking tour, led by an expert. - First class walking tour with an excellent guide, George. Despite us both being Newcastle residents, we learnt something about the city and its medieval history at every stop along the way. My only tiny comment is that we spent a very long time at the start, setting the scene and I would reduce this “intro” to a few minutes at most.
A lot of people think that Newcastle’s ancient history starts and finishes with the Romans. This superb tour proved that belief could not be further from the truth!

Great comprehensive tour! - We took this walking tour in the morning (1030) which I highly recommend. The guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. Many very interesting facts a stories of Newcastle's history were shared. At the end of the tour you get a ticket for the actual castle to explore on our own schedule. We elected to grab lunch then go back to enter making this tour economical and many hours (if you choose) of history. We highly recommend.

Fantastic walking tour - brought history to life! - This walking tour was an absolutely key part of our time in Newcastle! The guide was amazing — engaging, knowledgeable, generous with his time and a delightful story teller. We learned so much!! I strongly suggest that the city of Newcastle hire him to improve the overall infrastructure for tourists in Newcastle!! We were fascinated by the remarkable history of this ancient city, but we felt like the public information and infrastructure did not do justice to this rich heritage.

Medieval times brought to life. - The guide, Daniel, he was so enthusiastic about the history and this made his commentary and stories very interesting and informative. He’d readily answered my many questions with good knowledge and it did not appear to be too much trouble for his to answer. Brilliant tour and would definitely recommend to anyone visiting or indeed local people.

Fabulous walking tour of historical Newcastle! - Great walking tour. Our guide was Daniel who took us through a great walk through Newcastle and down to the quayside, taking in medieval sights as we went. Very interesting and entertaining!
