The Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA), founded by the dedicated Balinese cultural advocate Agung Rai, was inaugurated on the 9th of June, 1996. The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. Ing. Wardiman Djojonegoro, who was Indonesia’s Minister of Education and Culture at the time. ARMA boasts an eclectic assortment of artworks that span the spectrum from historic to modern expressions, encompassing the ancient Kamasan artwork crafted on tree bark and iconic works of Batuan creators from the 1930s and 1940s. It is also the exclusive home on the Bali island for the 19th-century creations of Javanese artists Raden Saleh and Syarif Bustaman. The museum also features works by expatriate artists who made Bali their home, like Willem Gerard Hofker, Rudolf Bonnet, and Willem Dooijewaard. Representing a seminal figure in Balinese art, Walter Spies’ paintings are distinctly highlighted in ARMA’s collection due to his significant role in cultivating the island’s art scene.
