The cave is situated at the edge of a crevasse formed by the confluence of two streams, known as the Pangkung River, which merges with the Petanu River, called Campuhan. The name Goa Gajah is believed to originate from ‘Lwa Gajah,’ a term referring to a Buddhist temple or hermitage for monks. The name is mentioned in the Negara Kertagama manuscript, compiled by Mpu Prapanca in 1365 AD. This historical site represents a blend of Buddhist and Hindu Shiva beliefs, evident from the relics found here, and is often included in one-day tours to Besakih Temple.

Also known as Pura Penataran Agung, it is Bali’s main place of worship, consisting of a complex of twenty-two temples set on parallel ridges. The Besakih Temple complex embodies the Balinese belief in Tri Hita Kirana, which emphasizes living in balance and harmony between humans and God, society, and the natural environment. The name Besakih is derived from ‘Basuki,’ an old Sanskrit word. Known as the Mother Temple of Bali, it is the largest temple on the island. Our journey continues to Goa Lawah Temple, a sacred temple by the sea, notable for its cave inhabited by thousands of tame bats.
