A Dawn Arrival at Udawalawe

The anticipation was palpable as we set off from Ella in the pre-dawn hours, the sky still cloaked in darkness. Our guide, Gimhana, had arranged everything seamlessly, ensuring our journey to Udawalawe National Park was as smooth as possible. As a wildlife photographer, the prospect of capturing the first light of day over the park was exhilarating. Arriving just as the sun began to rise, the park was alive with the sounds of nature waking up. Birds flitted through the trees, their calls echoing in the crisp morning air, while the rustle of leaves hinted at the presence of other creatures.

Our early arrival was rewarded with sightings of a myriad of animals. From the elusive jungle cats to the playful monkeys, each encounter was a reminder of the rich biodiversity that Udawalawe harbors. Breakfast by the River

As the sun climbed higher, we paused for breakfast by a serene riverbank. The meal, composed of locally sourced ingredients, was a delightful introduction to Sri Lankan cuisine. After breakfast, we continued our journey around the expansive lake at Udawalawe. Gimhana had predicted that the elephants would be drawn to the water as the day grew warmer, and he was right. We were greeted by the sight of a herd of elephants, including several young calves, cooling off by the lake’s edge. Watching these majestic creatures interact in their natural habitat was a humbling experience, one that reinforced the importance of conservation efforts to protect such incredible wildlife.

A Farewell to Remember

The final hours of our safari were filled with more remarkable encounters. We observed water buffaloes grazing, monkeys swinging through the trees, and a variety of bird species soaring overhead.
