Udawalawe National Park, Sri Lanka’s sixth biggest refuge for animals, is located 112 miles (180 km) south-central from the capital, Colombo. The park, positioned directly to the south of the Central Highlands, presents a mesmerizing backdrop because of the escarpment. Established in 1972, the primary purpose of Udawalawe National Park was to safeguard the Udawalawe reservoir’s catchment area, which supplies water for agriculture and hydro-power production. The park, which spans roughly 30,821 hectares, is reminiscent of an African game park.
