The lake is part of an expansive 50km long wetland system connected by a swamp, which includes over 13 other lakes, five of which fall within the park’s boundaries. The area was once a vast savannah, but has now developed a unique woodland ecosystem due to the absence of elephants. In the park’s western region, the savannah landscape gives way to rocky ridges, forested gorges, patches of papyrus, and narrow strips of lush riparian woodland lining the lakes.
