A Journey Through Time: The Enchanting Ruins of Umm Qais

As I embarked on the Amman History Tour, I was filled with anticipation. The allure of exploring the ancient ruins of Umm Qais, Jerash, and Ajloun was irresistible. My journey began in the northwestern corner of Jordan, where the ruins of the Decapolis city of Gadara, now known as Umm Qais, awaited. The site is a striking juxtaposition of Roman ruins and an abandoned Ottoman-era village, offering a vantage point that encompasses views of three countries: Jordan, Syria, and Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

Walking through the remnants of this once-thriving city, I felt a profound connection to the past. The stones beneath my feet whispered stories of a bygone era, and the panoramic views of the Golan Heights, Mt Hermon, and the Sea of Galilee were a testament to the city’s historical significance. It was a moment of reflection, a reminder of the transient nature of human endeavors and the enduring beauty of the natural world.

The Timeless Elegance of Jerash

Our next stop was Jerash, a city that seamlessly blends the old with the new. As we arrived in the modern town, its provincial streets and small market gardens gave little hint of its illustrious past. But crossing from the new town into the ancient city, marked by the imposing Hadrian’s Arch, was like stepping through a portal in time.

The grandeur of Jerash was immediately apparent. The Oval Colonnade, temples, and other Greco-Roman structures stood as a testament to the city’s wealth and importance in antiquity. As I wandered through the ancient streets, I couldn’t help but marvel at the architectural prowess of the past. It was a humbling experience, one that reminded me of the rich tapestry of history that we are all a part of.

The Majestic Ajloun Castle

Our final destination was the formidable Ajloun Castle, perched atop a hill with commanding views of the surrounding landscape. Built by Saladin’s forces in the 12th century, the castle is a symbol of strength and resilience. Its rough-hewn stones and ancient walls tell tales of battles fought and won, of a time when the castle was a crucial stronghold in the region.

As I explored the castle’s labyrinthine corridors and climbed its towers, I was struck by the sense of history that permeated the air. The castle’s strategic location offered breathtaking views, a reminder of its importance in the defense of the region. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and discovery, a journey that deepened my appreciation for the rich history and cultural heritage of the Middle East.

The Amman History Tour was more than just a journey through ancient ruins; it was a spiritual pilgrimage, a chance to connect with the past and find inspiration for the future.
