Once considered for the title of the world’s eighth wonder, Sigiriya is an historical royal residence. Today, it and Dambulla are acknowledged by UNESCO as a heritage site and draw a significant number of tourists. Dambulla is situated 148 km to the northeast of Sri Lanka’s Colombo, in its Central Province. The city is notable for its ancient cave temple, also referred to as the Golden Rock Temple, which is a renowned attraction for visitors. Close to Dambulla, approximately 25kms away, lays Sigiriya. It hosts the famed “Lion’s Rock”, a 220-meter high geological feature that was adorned with a royal palace at its summit by an ancient monarch. Sigiriya isn’t just a well-preserved example of old urban life, it also offers a rock climbing adventure for many visitors. A single day’s tour of both Sigiriya and Dambulla is adequate for an encounter with Sri Lanka’s illustrious history. From Colombo, begin your journey around 6.00 am. Delight in the picturesque four-hour drive, explore the two historical cities, and return to Colombo when the clock strikes midnight.
