Day 2: GURA HUMORULUI – PIATRA NEAMT (Moldova – 110 km)
Manastirea Voronet - Begin your day with a visit to Voronet Monastery, an iconic painted church with well-preserved frescoes that are around 500 years old, featuring the unique “Voronet blue.” Here, you’ll learn about Romanian Orthodoxy, religious traditions, and beliefs through the artwork. Don’t miss the famous “Doomsday” fresco, which is one-of-a-kind.
Sucevita Monastery - Next, head to Sucevita to visit the largest painted convent, resembling a fortress. The exterior frescoes have stood the test of time, and here you’ll find the best-preserved paintings among Bucovina’s painted monasteries.
Moldovita Monastery - Admire the predominantly gold and deep blue exterior wall paintings completed in the 16th century. The highlight is the large Siege of Constantinople fresco. Also, don’t miss the Tree of Jesse, depicting Christ’s genealogy, a common theme in medieval European iconography.
Day 3: PIATRA NEAMT – SIGHISOARA – BRASOV (Transylvania – 321 km)
Bicaz Canyon - Today, you’ll enter the legendary land of Transylvania and visit its UNESCO sites.
On the way, enjoy breathtaking mountain views as you cross the Carpathians. You’ll pass through picturesque villages and learn about the Szekler minority in Romania, known for their unique culture and lifestyle. You’ll also see Bicaz Gorge and the Red Lake, both unique in Romania due to their formation.
Centrul Istoric Sighisoara - Arrive in Sighisoara (a UNESCO Heritage site), the only inhabited medieval citadel in Eastern Europe. Here, time seems to follow a different rhythm. Discover the citadel’s history, see the well-preserved defensive walls and towers, and admire the medieval houses along narrow streets. Highlights include the house where Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) was born, the Clock Tower with its panoramic views, the Covered Stairs, and the Evangelical Church.
Viscri Fortified Church - In the afternoon, visit Viscri village, a medieval settlement that charmed Prince Charles of Wales. Viscri is a colorful Saxon village with an authentic local touch and well-preserved lifestyle. This medieval village is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stroll through the village’s old streets, admire the genuine Saxon houses, learn about the traditional lifestyle, visit the Fortified Church, and, if time permits, stop at a local coffee shop to taste homemade traditional cakes and drinks. We tried them and loved them!
Day 4: BRASOV – PREJMER – SINAIA – BUCHAREST (Wallachia – 211 km)
Brasov Historical Center - Brasov, known as Kronstadt (“the city of the crown”) in German, is considered one of Romania’s most beautiful cities. Walk through the narrow, cobblestone streets of the old city center. Visit The Council Square, The Council Tower, and the famous Black Church, the largest Gothic structure in Eastern Europe.
Peasant Fortified Church at Prejmer - Visit another UNESCO Monument, the Fortified Church of Prejmer. Here, you’ll learn about the Saxons (Germans) who settled here in the 10th-11th centuries. Their culture, life, and traditions are significant to Romania. Visiting the fortified church will help you understand why.
Peles Castle - Finally, re-enter Wallachia, another historical region of Romania. Stop in Sinaia, a renowned mountain resort known as the “Pearl of the Carpathians.” Visit Peles Castle, the former summer residence of Romania’s first royal couple, King Carol I and Queen Elisabeth.
