Trekking Through Ba Be: A Journey into Vietnam’s Hidden Heart
Craving an authentic adventure away from the tourist crowds, I set out on a trek through Ba Be National Park. Join me as I explore remote villages, meet local tribes, and discover the natural wonders of this hidden gem in Vietnam.
Journey to Ba Be National Park
Leaving the bustling streets of Hanoi behind, I embarked on a four-day trek through Ba Be National Park, a hidden gem in Vietnam’s northeastern region. The journey to Ba Be was an adventure in itself, with winding roads and breathtaking views of the countryside. Our small group of five was fortunate to have a comfortable 12-seater van, making the long drive more bearable. As someone who often travels solo, it was refreshing to share this experience with fellow adventurers, each of us eager to explore the untouched beauty of Ba Be.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the serene beauty of Ba Be Lake, surrounded by lush tropical forests and towering limestone mountains. Our guide, Lhoan, was a wealth of knowledge, sharing stories of the local tribes and their way of life. The first night was spent in a traditional wooden stilt house, hosted by a warm and welcoming Tay family. The simplicity of the homestay, coupled with the delicious home-cooked meals and strong rice wine, made for an unforgettable start to our trek.
Trekking Through Remote Villages
The next day, we set out on foot to explore the remote villages nestled within the park. The trek was challenging at times, with steep inclines and rugged terrain, but the stunning vistas made every step worthwhile. As we crossed the Pe Lu Stream and ascended into the hills, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the verdant landscape.
Meeting the local communities was a highlight of the trek. The Tay and Dzao people welcomed us into their homes, offering insights into their daily lives and traditions. It was a humbling experience to witness their resilience and resourcefulness, living in harmony with nature. Our second night was spent at Mr. Linh’s Homestay, a well-equipped and comfortable retreat that provided a much-needed respite after a long day of trekking.
Discovering Natural Wonders
Our final days in Ba Be were filled with more exploration and discovery. We visited the awe-inspiring Dau Dang Waterfall, where the rushing waters created a symphony of sound that echoed through the forest. A boat trip on Ba Be Lake offered a different perspective of the park’s natural beauty, as we glided past limestone cliffs and explored the mysterious Puong Cave, home to thousands of bats.
Despite the chilly temperatures, which were unusually cold for the region, the experience was nothing short of magical. The tranquility of Ba Be, combined with the authentic encounters with local tribes, made this trek a truly unique adventure. For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience in Vietnam, Ba Be Trek is a journey worth taking. Just be sure to pack warm clothing and a sense of adventure!
