Causeway Coastal Experience including Giant’s Causeway and Game of Thrones Rope Bridge

Causeway Coast & Glens - Depart from Belfast and journey along the stunning Causeway Coastal Route to Glenarm. If you’re heading to the Causeway Coast, make sure to stop at the charming village of Glenarm. Located at the base of Glenarm Glen, the first of the nine Glens of Antrim, this unique village offers something for everyone. Enjoy Georgian streets with well-preserved architecture, rich heritage, and breathtaking landscapes. Explore the enchanting Glenarm Forest, the beautiful Glenarm Marina with its fully restored harbor and pier, and the 16th-century Glenarm Castle and walled garden.

Carnlough Harbour - On our way to Carnlough, take a photo opportunity, grab a coffee or refreshment, and stroll around the quaint little harbor. Learn about Paddy the Pigeon. Carnlough was a filming location for the Braavos Canal in Game of Thrones. (Public toilets are available). Admire the views and see the Glens of Antrim. The harbor of Carnlough was built by the owners of nearby quarries, with a mineral tramway network connecting the quarries to the harbor. Some remnants of this network, including two bridges spanning the village’s parallel streets, can still be seen today. Nowadays, Carnlough serves as a mooring place for small fishing boats and leisure craft.

Cushendall - Cushendall, formerly known as Newtownglens, is a coastal village and townland in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It lies in the historic barony of Glenarm Lower and the civil parish of Layd, and is part of the Causeway Coast and Glens district. Cushendall (from Irish: Cois Abhann Dalla, meaning ‘foot of the River Dall’) is situated on the A2 coast road between Glenariff and Cushendun, in the Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is nestled in the shadow of the table-topped Lurigethan Mountain and at the meeting point of three of the Glens of Antrim: Glenaan, Glenballyemon, and Glencorp. This part of the Irish coastline is separated from Scotland by the North Channel, with the Mull of Kintyre about 16 miles away.

Caves of Cushendun - Cushendun is a small coastal village in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, located off the A2 coast road between Cushendall and Ballycastle. It has a sheltered harbor and lies at the mouth of the River Dun and Glendun, one of the nine Glens of Antrim. You can see Johann the Goat. Cushendun (from Irish: Cois Abhann Doinne, meaning ‘foot of the River Dun’) is a small coastal village in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It sits off the A2 coast road between Cushendall and Ballycastle. It has a sheltered harbor and lies at the mouth of the River Dun and Glendun, one of the nine Glens of Antrim. The Mull of Kintyre in Scotland is only about 15 miles away across the North Channel. The Cushendun Caves were one of several Game of Thrones filming locations in Northern Ireland, used as the backdrop of the Stormlands. The caves were the setting for one of the most iconic scenes from season two of the series, where Melisandre gave birth to the Shadow Assassin.

Torr Head - Probably the most beautiful and picturesque road to drive along in Ireland is the Torr Head Scenic Route between Cushendun and Ballycastle. This narrow road, with its hairpin bends and blind spots, guarantees an adventurous ride, revealing a gorgeous landscape behind every turn. If visibility is good, you can see Scotland, which seems within reach from Torr Head. Scotland is literally 10 miles away. With spectacular views over the Mull of Kintyre, crashing waves, and historical intrigue, Torr Head is a popular destination for those touring the Causeway Coastal Route. We can climb to the top for amazing photos, but it’s not for the faint-hearted!

Ballycastle - Ballycastle is a small seaside town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, located on the northeastern coastal tip of Ireland, in the Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The harbor hosts the ferry to Rathlin Island, which can be seen from the coast.

Kinbane Castle - For those who enjoy some exercise, this is a great place to stop for a lovely walk with breathtaking scenery. Kinbane Castle (Caisleán Ceinn Bán, White Head Castle, Kenbane Castle) was built in 1547 by Colla MacDonnell. The castle was damaged and partly destroyed due to English sieges under Sir James Croft in the 1550s. Rebuilt afterward, Colla MacDonnell died at the castle in 1558, and his son Gillaspick MacDonnell subsequently inherited it. The hollow below the castle, known as Lag na Sassenach (Hollow of the English), was allegedly the site where a garrison of English soldiers sieging the castle were surrounded and killed during the 16th century. Sorley Boy MacDonnell, brother of Colla, later acquired the castle when trading property with Gillaspick. He later handed it to the MacAlisters because of their loyalty. The castle remained in the descendants of the MacAlisters of Kenbane until the 18th century.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge - A tour highlight, walk the plank! This will take approximately 1.5-2 hours of your tour, or we can stop for a photo opportunity instead. Connected to the cliffs by a rope bridge across the Atlantic Ocean, Carrick-a-Rede Island (home to a single building - a fisherman’s cottage) is the final destination. Suspended almost 100 ft (30 m) above sea level, the rope bridge was first erected by salmon fishermen over 250 years ago. The cost is approximately £10 per person.

Ballintoy - We can stop off for a delicious lunch at one of our favorites, the Ballintoy Arms, which serves local Irish food (vegan and vegetarian options) as well as some locally brewed alcohol. They also have an Iron Throne from Game of Thrones for a picture!

Ballintoy Harbour - Ballintoy Harbour was used as a Game of Thrones location twice. Located on Ireland’s north coast, it served as the filming location for Lordsport, the main port of Pyke, one of the Iron Islands and home to Theon and Yara Greyjoy.

Giant’s Causeway - The highlight of your tour, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Giant’s Causeway, is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (5 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and a national nature reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland, the Giant’s Causeway is sometimes named the eighth greatest natural wonder of the world. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some have four, five, seven, or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 meters (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 meters (92 ft) thick in places. Look out for the Giant’s Gate, the Giant’s Boot, and the Wishing Chair. The Giant’s Causeway is free for our clients.

Dunluce Castle - Dunluce Castle is a now-ruined medieval castle in Northern Ireland, the seat of Clan McDonnell. It is located on the edge of a basalt outcropping in County Antrim and is accessible via a bridge connecting it to the mainland. Stop off for a photo opportunity.

The Dark Hedges - The Dark Hedges is an avenue of beech trees along Bregagh Road between Armoy and Stranocum in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The trees form an atmospheric tunnel that has been used as a location in HBO’s popular television series Game of Thrones, making the avenue a popular tourist attraction. We can stop off for a photo opportunity.
