The Fairy Flag, Dunvegan Castle and the Fairy Bridge
The Fairy Flag is to be found in Dunvegan Castle but is thought to have come from The Fairy Bridge which is 3 miles away from the Castle. This site is magical but also a bit tragic as this is supposed to be the last location where the Chief of Clan Macleod saw his Fairy wife before leaving to return to Fairyland. It is also said that The Fairy Flag has the ability to save him from danger when it is waved.
  • Eilean Donan Castle - We stop at Eilean Donan Castle on our way to Skye for a photo opportunity
  • Skye Bridge - The Skye bridge viewpoint offers some fantastic views of the bridge with the Cuillin mountains in the background
  • Portree - When Dunvegan Castle is closed we will not go there or to The Fairy Bridge we will go to Portree instead where you will have the opportunity to see the beauty of Portree Harbour.
  • The Fairy Bridge - The Fairy Bridge has long been associated with the Chiefs of Clan Macleod as it was here that his wife The Fairy Princess tore off a piece of her wedding dress and gave it to her husband before she returned to Fairyland. This piece of her wedding dress is known as The Fairy Flag and can be found in Dunvegan Castle - Ancestral home of Clan Macleod for more than 800 years.

Additional Information

The Isle of Skye is an Enchanted and whimsical destination that has a storied connection with Fairies. This day-long excursion from Inverness brings you to several of these fairy-associated locations where you can stroll and absorb the aura.

The Fairy Pools, located at the base of the Cuillin mountains, often tempt some visitors to take a dip. The Fairy Glen, situated on the Trotternish peninsula, offers serene scenery, stunning panoramic views, and captivating walks. The Fairy Bridge is known as the last place the Macleod Clan chief saw his Fairy spouse, before her return to Fairyland. The Fairy Flag can be viewed at Dunvegan Castle, the 800-year-long residence of the Clan Macleod.

En route to the Isle of Skye, we’ll also pause at Eilean Donan Castle for a photo break. If Dunvegan castle is inaccessible, we will visit Portree instead, bypassing the castle and The Fairy Bridge.

Fairyland! - We had an amazing day travelling to Fairy Glen…the Highlands is incredibly beautiful. The cold, blustery winds and drizzle didn’t dampen our enjoyment of this tour. Our guide Lawrence was outstanding…friendly, thoughtful and professional. A must visit!!

BEST tour guide ever! - We booked a 4-day private tour plus transfer from Edinburgh for Stirling Castle, Inverness, Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns, Dunrobin Castle, Isle of Skye, Fairy Pools, Fairy Glen, Fairy Bridge and more. Lawrence was the BEST tour guide ever! He was so professional, friendly, knowledgeable about the area & history, organized, reliable, punctual (always a little early), helpful & fun. He showed us all of the best sights & made booking & planning a breeze. Driving through the tight & busy one way roads in Isle of Skye, we were so glad to leave the driving & parking to a professional! When our Portree hotel reservation was lost, Lawrence went above & beyond & made several calls on our behalf until the hotel was able to shuffle & accommodate us. This was a big deal because this hotel & all other hotels in Portree were fully booked. Also, on our last day, Lawrence drove us to the Glenfinnan Train Station to ensure that we didn’t miss our train when the ferry was cancelled unexpectedly. Lawrence was absolutely wonderful & saved the day for us twice and took all the stress off our shoulders. Thank you so much, Lawrence, for helping to make this a family trip of a lifetime!

It was absolutely beautiful and the sun came out in the afternoon just in time to enjoy the top notch views all around. Lawrence was incredible! He shared not only historical info about the place but also took us to the nice spots for photos. Highly recommended! Thank you Lawrence! :)

A Must Do for everyone! Lawrence was the BEST! - My family and I did the day tour with Lawrence as our guide, and wow - what a day! The day started with seeing highland cows and Eilean Donan Castle, followed by a drive along Loch Ness to the Isle of Skye. The driving was never boring, as Lawrence told us history and stories about Scotland the whole way. He was even able to add to the history we had learned about Culloden the day before! Then, on Isle of Skye, Lawrence was able to fit so much in! His initial plan for us hadn't included seeing the Fairy Pools, but we asked and he was able to completely adjust the plan so that we could see it! We saw Portree, Old Man of Storr, Bioda Bhuide, and other stunning landscapes. Lawrence gave us the histories and information on each site. We went to a local restaurant, the Oyster Shed, for fresh caught seafood and then stopped at Talisker Distillery. We then went to the Fairy Pools and hiked around the area - it was beautiful. On the way back we were discussing how we wouldn't get to spend much time in Inverness, so Lawrence even took us into Inverness to show us the Old High Church and gave us dinner recommendations. Overall, this experience was a highlight of the trip for us, and probably my favorite day in Scotland. Having Lawrence as our guide was the best part. His love for Scotland is palpable and infectious. He truly cares that you have a good experience, ensuring that you leave his tour with a deep appreciation for Scotland, its landscape, and especially its people.

Best Tour of Scotland - This is a must book tour of Scotland! Lawrence took us on a tour through Inverness, Loch Ness, Isle of Skye, and lastly to the fairy Pools all in a days time. We made multiple stops along the way and we were able to see the beautiful castles, lochs, landscape, waterfalls, historic sites, fairy Pools and highland coos! He provided history and facts along the way and we were able to learn so much about Scotland's history, land, wildlife, etc. He also took us to the oyster shed to enjoy salmon, oysters, mussels, and trout...it was delicious and such a fun experience! I was so happy to see and learn so much about bonny Scotland in one day! This is a must book tour...worth every penny, you will not be disappointed!

No better tour or way around the Highlands! - Truly the only way to see the Highlands!! Lawrence is a true gem and quickly felt like part of our family! He was thoughtful in his preparation for our trip by providing snacks and water. He was helpful at every pass with luggage and opening doors. He was considerate of our time, allowing us to dictate the schedule and see what we wanted. The love for his country and history really showed. We appreciated the tour and highly recommend it!!

The perfect day in Scotland! - Laurence was incredible, he was so knowledgeable and knew exactly what to show us. It was a big day (because it was the middle of winter and the sun was setting early), but we never felt rushed at all AND we got to see absolutely everything we wanted to! Laurence was amazing at making sure we were stopping when we wanted to, and staying as long as we liked at each place. Snacks and water were provided plus the opportunity to stop for a proper lunch at an inn. (Which we didn’t take because we were set on seeing as much as possible.) The van was very luxurious and clean, with lots of space to get comfy! It was the perfect day, 10/10 recommend Laurence and this tour!
