Highlights
  • Blue Grotto (Il-Hnejja) - You will first drive to the Blue Grotto. The Blue Grotto is actually a number of sea caverns on the southern coast of Malta, west of the Wied iz-Zurrieq harbour and across the small uninhabited islet of Filfla. Everyday from sunrise until about 1300 hrs, a unique sight can be observed here. The cave’s location combined with the sunlight lead to the water mirroring shows numerous shades of blue. Several caverns mirror the brilliant phosphorescent colours of the underwater flora; other caverns show a deep dark shade of blue. If weather permits, you can do a 25 minute boat trip around the caves for an extra cost.

Excellent Excursions! - Booked at the last minute as I really wanted to see The Blue Grotto again as I hadn't been since a child. Upon queuing for the Grotto boat trip, I was barged out of the way by another tour group and the ticket office closed just before I got there due to the waves getting too choppy. I informed my guide (can't remember her name, sorry!) who politely but persistently persuaded the staff to sell me a ticket, THANK YOU! The Grotto tour was amazing, seeing the beautiful geology and crystals in the water. However I could completely understand why the tours were being closed down as the sea was getting a bit rough. Then on to Marsaslokk for the market, which was nice but very crowded. Wasn't anything there that really piqued my interest. On Tuesday night I did the evening tours of Valletta, Mdina, and Mosta with Vincent being our guide, who gave a fascinating insight into Malta's history. Got to see an amazing 5D show in Valletta, the beautiful quiet streets and views in Mdina, and the outside of Mosta dome (only literally stopped in Mosta for 5 minutes, it just has the dome and nothing else). Hello Malta Tours are highly recommended by me! 🙂

Cala LAPSI very close to BLUE GROTTO - Our visit has been very cool… the surroundings are great and very close is a LAPSI cove that is very good and less full of boats… TOTALLY RECOMMENDED

A very pleasant Luzzu experience - A very pleasant half-day tour if a little tight on time at the destinations. Blue Grotto visit is only possible by boat (and, of course, in appropriate sea conditions!): €10pp extra payable in cash at the quayside. Certainly worth it, we thought, to explore the several sea caves under the cliffs with their eponymous bright waters. (Otherwise, just a pleasant little harbour with a few colourful luzzijiet.) Although without compromising safety, the little boats were packed with passengers, and those sitting in front or at the side had the better experience and the greater ease of photography. Marsaxlokk (South Port) still very much a picturesque fishing village (despite the power station on the seaward skyline!) with an extensive fish market of small stallholders selling all kinds of catch, and with traditional, colourful luzzijiet with their eyes of Horus still very much in evidence amongst the other vessels - the only place on the island, it seems, with such a traditional scene today. The Sunday market was much more that just a fish market - and very crowded with locals and tourists. The tour allowed just enough time to visit the market and to grab a pleasant fish lunch at a quayside restaurant. Mark facilitated the visits well and provided some interesting commentary not only on the destinations but on other aspects of Maltese life whilst we were travelling aboard the bus.

Daily market by this quaint fishing harbor. Market stalls offer locally made crafts as well as touristy souvenirs - This was another stop on the hop on hop off bus. I went on a Wednesday and there were a few craft stalls selling beautiful handmade table linens and jewelry. But most of the stalls had tourist merchandise you can find anywhere: Malta hats, tees, small ceramics etc. A walk around the bustling, picturesque harbor is worth the trip, followed by a drink at one of the small cafes while watching the world go by. You can go on a boat trip round to Blue Grotto from Marsaxlokk. However, I hopped back on the bus and it was a couple of stops after. I was hoping to go on a boat trip when I got there, but the grotto was only open to swimmers and the boats were not running. If I had known I would have taken a swimsuit as the water looked really inviting

Beautiful caves - tour operator unreliable - It started off bumpy: We were supposed to be picked up at the hotel - after 20 minutes we called the organizer - we would be picked up at the Hotel Preluna. So we set off on foot. When we got there the bus was just pulling up - lucky us. Good tour guide Mark. The tour we booked in German was of course not in German - but in English + French. However, the tour guide spoke very clear English/French - which was easy to follow. The Blue Grotto is definitely worth seeing. We were lucky and were able to go on the small cutter due to the weather conditions (10€ per person for about 10 minutes is not a bargain either) The small town of Marsaschlock (that's how it's pronounced) is completely overcrowded. It's better not to go there with a tour group.

Okay - Blue Grotto was good to see by boat. Market was a waste of time. Guide was hard to understand. Overall, we’ll organised and prompt arrival & departure

Confirmed tour but not picked up and no refund - We booked this tour the day before departure and it was confirmed on line for the pickup time and date. After 15 minutes of waiting (arrived 5 minutes early) , we rang the company to confirm that they were coming to pick us up and they said it would be a few more minutes. After waiting another 10 minutes or so, a person from their company who was running the hop on / off buses rang their colleague and confirmed they would be coming. After a further 30-40 minutes of waiting he rang them again at which time he said they weren’t picking us up as we booked too late and we could do the hop on off bus instead which would come in 10 minutes. 30 minutes later the non-air conditioned, crowded bus came (do not do this either). The company did not contact us or reply to my emails and no refund has been sent. Terrible company, do not use, they should not confirm and take our money if they they cannot pick you up.

Avoid this Tour Operator - Take a Self Guided Tour byTaxi, Uber or Bolt! - Two issues. First, we received very specific pickup location details and waited for 20 minutes with no one arriving. We phoned the tour operator and the lady VERY RUDELY told us we were at the wrong location. When I explained the information we had, she said we were wrong (I have a record of what we were sent) … the. She said we better hurry and run to another location (we had no idea where it was) … and she had the audacity to say if we missed the ride we would miss the tour but still have to pay. Ultimately, 45 minutes later we managed to find the bus! Then the guide was the least informative guide we’ve had so far (and not very pleasant). Vince was his name. In the end, the tour amounted to nothing more than a bus ride to the grotto (We had to pay €10 for the actual boat ride to the grotto) and then a bus ride to the fish market at Marsaxlokk. I highly recommend just hiring a taxi, Uber or Bolt and save the hassle … would not ever use this company again and not any your operator for this specific tour … whatever you read about the grotto and the fish market is as much as there is to know. Enjoy a self guided tour and avoid this company!
