Highlights
  • South Fork of the American River - You’ll meet at the OARS American River Outpost on the morning of your trip. After an orientation and safety talk, we’ll take a 25-minute drive to the Chili Bar put-in.

Meatgrinder Rapid is the exciting start to the splashy, big-water fun on the upper section of the South Fork. As beautiful river scenes stretch out around us, rapids like Racehorse Bend, Maya, and Triple Threat await us further downstream.

After a short section of Class I-II whitewater, we find ourselves at the notorious Troublemaker Rapid. This Class III rapid packs an exhilarating ride and can offer plenty of surprises. As we float by the historic town of Coloma and the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, the trip begins to wind down—but not without a few more stories from your personable and knowledgeable guide.

Once we return to the Outpost, we encourage you to explore our nature trails, play campground games, or just savor your time along the river.

Family rafting adventure! - This trip was amazing for myself (52), and my 22, 20 and 11 yr old 'children'. The guides - Lizbeth, Ari & Mike and all the support staff - were fun, funny, exciting, kind, confident, reassuring and strong! We felt empowered and excited, and we loved the rapids and also the calm relaxing stretches of river. Oars is very inclusive and open to all ages, family types, experience levels (we had none), and body sizes. The actual raft guides (Lizbeth & Ari) gave clear directions, encouraged us, kept us safe, told us funny stories and took the time to get to know us! Thank you so much!

Fantastic!!! - Ken was a rockstar! He kept us safe and IN the boat! Truly a great guide! Lunch was provided. Unlike other tours they actually provided a nice spread, plenty of food for everyone (lots of teen boys on our tour).

Rapid Adventures - Me and my family had so much fun. The guides made everything very simple by telling us when to paddle. We were constantly splashed and hydrated so the heat was less of a problem.

The Oars Team is the best! - Just returned from an amazing trip with Oars! We had a group of 40 people - moms and 8th grade graduates. The Oars crew took great care of us and the guides were awesome with the moms and our energetic group of kiddos. We appreciated their focus on safety and fun. The guides were experts, knew the river well and shared interesting historical tidbits along the way. We rafted 2 days, spent the night in tents at the Oars campsite. The campground was great, the bathrooms were clean, great outdoor showers with hot water. A short walk to a beach for swimming. The food was delicious —2 lunches, 1 breakfast and 1 dinner. We had the best time. Shout out to Alec, our awesome guide! He was fabulous. ALL of the guides were great and helped make our trip so much fun. Highly recommend Oars!!
