Additional Information

Follow the course of history by tracing the paths of the African-Americans in Portland who advanced the city, the state, and the nation towards the principles of independence, democracy, liberty, and fairness. Black prowess and knowledge played a significant role in Maine’s initial settlements. During this journey, you’ll encounter the stories of African-American Yankees who laid the foundation of Maine, abolished slavery regionally, propelled our seafaring industries, accrued political power, defied racial barriers, and broadened the rights of Mainers in contemporary times.

Strolling on time-worn granite cobblestones — once trodden by national icons such as Frederick Douglass — you’ll traverse past shops which once housed African-American-owned barber establishments, where anti-slavery activists discreetly shared information with operators of the Underground Railroad.

With a duration of 2 hours, you will be engaged in 1.5 miles of fascinating historical narration. Owner and guide, Dugan Murphy, meticulously researched the archives to curate a series of amazing tales usually sidestepped in conventional tours. TripAdvisor has lauded him as Portland’s foremost guide!

  • Pets are not allowed on tours unless medically required.

Black History in Portland Maine - The Portland Maine Black History Walking tour was incredible. It was full of facts & history. You can tell the tour guide Dugan takes great pride in the information they have researched and are able to deliver. It honestly was the best out of all the tours we took while visiting. If you are in town you wont go wrong with booking this tour.

Great hidden gem - Amazing tour that really dives into the fascinating but little known history of African Americans in and from Maine and how that history is connected to American and world history overalls. Really, I cannot recommend this tour enough.

Small, but mighty! - Dugan was an excellent guide and this tour shared so much about Portland's small, but mighty historic Black population. I've visited Portland for nearly 10 years and wish I would have taken this tour much sooner. I cannot recommend it enough. A great, and inspiring time.

Fun and educational - It was fun and enjoyable. This information tied into the fire truck tour. The kids where able to recall information from the fire truck tour and expand on the information. The older family member was able to relate and expand their knowledge. Very relevant to the older members.

Walking tour of ME & NE Black History in Portland - Dugan was so well versed on the prerevolutionary history of ME & NE and had a profound narrative on how so many historical figures related to contemporary figures & events of today. He was really attuned to the needs and interests of those of us on his tour which he developed himself. It's truly a unique experience.

A grand slam!!! This tour is worth the time. - To me, it was the best walking tour I ever been on. Dugan was so informative. I enjoyed it when Dugan talked about Susan Rice's maternal grandparents. They were from Jamaica and made contributions in Portland. My father is from Jamaica as well. I also enjoyed the talk about the Abyssinian Church. I truly enjoyed it!!!
