Washington admired Durham as a model for the black middle class, and it’s clear why when you consider the accomplishments of its African American community: from establishing the largest black-owned company of the 20th century to creating a brick-making powerhouse that constructed much of the city, and much more.
Durham is also home to “Parrish Street”, the best-preserved “black business district” in the nation, an attraction that leaves a lasting impression.
