Initially, coffee wasn’t brewed in this area but rather consumed for its energizing effects. According to oral traditions, the Haya people, residing in the northwestern part of Tanzania in the area now known as the Kagera region, were the sole documented group to utilize the beans. They would boil Robusta beans, infuse them with herbs, and then chew the concoction for stimulation. Coffee beans also served as a medium of exchange within the tribe, and the cultivation and production of the beans were strictly regulated by tribal chiefs.
