Dolphins and Iguanas: A Sunlit Adventure in Uvita
When the waves take a backseat, the ocean still calls. I ventured to Uvita for a whale watching tour, eager to experience the marine wonders of Costa Rica. Join me as I recount a day filled with dolphins, unexpected encounters, and the sun-soaked beauty of the sea.
Setting Sail in Uvita
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I made my way to the meeting point in Uvita, a small beach town that has become a favorite among those of us who chase the waves and the sun. The air was filled with the scent of salt and adventure, and I couldn’t help but feel a familiar thrill of anticipation. This time, however, I wasn’t here to ride the waves but to embark on a different kind of oceanic adventure: a whale watching tour.
As I arrived at the office, I was greeted with warm smiles and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Our guide, Jennifer, a bilingual naturalist with a passion for the sea, welcomed us and gave a brief overview of what to expect. With snacks in hand, we set off on a short walk to the beach, where our boat awaited. The excitement was palpable as we boarded through the surf, ready to explore the wonders of Marino Ballena National Park.
Dancing with Dolphins
The ocean was alive with possibilities as we set out on our three-hour journey. Though it was mid-March and the humpback whales had already migrated to colder waters, the sea had other surprises in store for us. As we cruised along the coastline, the water shimmered under the sun, and soon enough, we were greeted by the playful antics of spotted and bottlenosed dolphins.
These magnificent creatures danced alongside our boat, leaping and spinning in a display that left us all in awe. It was a reminder of the ocean’s endless wonders and the joy of being part of such a vibrant ecosystem. Jennifer, our guide, shared her knowledge of the dolphins’ behavior, making the experience even more enriching. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and it was clear that she loved sharing these moments with fellow ocean lovers.
A Moment Missed, A Memory Made
As we continued our journey, the water conditions weren’t ideal for snorkeling, so we opted for a refreshing swim at Playa Pinuela instead. The beach was a serene escape, with its golden sands and gentle waves inviting us to relax and soak in the sun.
It was here that we had an unexpected encounter with nature. Two green iguanas came sprinting down the sand, one even attempting to board our boat. It was a scene straight out of a nature documentary, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of missing a “Planet Earth II” moment. A waterproof bag for my camera would have been handy, but the memory of that quirky encounter is etched in my mind.
As we made our way back to the office, Jennifer ensured we were well-hydrated with chilled fruit and water, a thoughtful touch that added to the overall experience. Though we didn’t see the whales this time, the tour was a reminder of the ocean’s magic and the unexpected adventures that await those who seek them. Uvita, with its sun-soaked beaches and vibrant marine life, continues to be a place of wonder and inspiration for this nomadic surfer.
