From Coffee to Craters: A Day in Costa Rica’s Heartland
Trading surfboards for hiking boots, I embarked on a journey through Costa Rica’s lush landscapes. From the aromatic Doka Coffee Plantation to the majestic Poás Volcano and the enchanting La Paz Waterfalls, this tour offered a refreshing change of pace. Join me as I explore the wonders beyond the waves.
A Morning Brew at Doka Coffee Plantation
As a surfer, my mornings usually start with the sound of waves crashing against the shore, but this time, it was the aroma of freshly brewed coffee that greeted me. The Doka Coffee Plantation was our first stop, and it was a delightful change of pace. The plantation was beautifully landscaped, and though we didn’t have much time to explore, the breakfast was a hearty spread of eggs, rice and beans, fruit, and plantains. Of course, the coffee was the star of the show. Our guide, Adrian, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing insights into the coffee-making process with such passion that even a wave-chaser like me found it fascinating. I ended up buying some coffee for friends, a testament to the quality of the brew.
Scaling the Heights of Poás Volcano
Next, we ventured to the Poás Volcano, a towering giant that stands at 2,708 meters. The altitude was a bit of a challenge, especially for someone used to sea level, but the views were worth every breath. We were fortunate with the weather, catching a clear view of the first lake, though the second was shrouded in clouds. The walk to the second lake was a bit of a trek, but the photo opportunities were endless. It was a quick visit, but the experience of standing on the edge of an active volcano was exhilarating. I couldn’t help but think of the power of nature, much like the ocean’s waves that I chase.
The Enchanting La Paz Waterfalls
Our final destination was the La Paz Waterfalls, a place that felt like stepping into a different world. The animal reserve and gardens were a mixed bag for me. While the gardens were stunning, the sight of animals in cages tugged at my heartstrings. The butterfly and hummingbird gardens were a treat, though, offering a glimpse into the vibrant life of these delicate creatures. But the true highlight was the waterfalls. The sound of rushing water was music to my ears, reminiscent of the ocean’s roar. I wished I could have lingered longer, just soaking in the natural beauty, but time was not on our side. As we made our way back, I reflected on the day’s adventures, grateful for the chance to experience a different side of Costa Rica, away from the surf but still deeply connected to nature.
