Walk the paved trail of 3 kilometers (1.8 mi), which will take you to the base of the La Paz waterfall. La Paz Waterfall Gardens is Costa Rica’s top private ecological highlight, featuring San Jose’s finest trails. It encompasses the country’s most renowned cascades, including the famous La Paz Waterfall, and serves as a wildlife sanctuary and private reserve hosting over 100 animal species. They also offer programs on environmental education. There are five waterfalls nested within the cloud and rainforest. An aviary with 40 bird species offers toucan feeding, along with displays of titi monkeys and insects. It includes a butterfly garden with a lab, 2-toed sloths, capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys, and a hummingbird garden with more than 26 documented species that allow morning and afternoon hand-feeding. There are also exhibition areas for jaguars, pumas, ocelots, tigrillos, cauceles, and oxen carts at the ‘house of peace’ with domesticated animals. Other displays include frog exhibits, orchid showcases, and presentations of heliconias and bromeliads.
