The Call of the Wild Rapids

As a former professional athlete, I’ve chased adrenaline across the globe, from the dizzying heights of the Himalayas to the vast deserts of the Sahara. But nothing quite prepared me for the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland’s East Glacial River. Known as the “Beast of the East,” this river is a siren call to thrill-seekers like myself, promising an unforgettable journey through one of the most remote and breathtaking landscapes on Earth.

Arriving in Varmahlíð, my partner and I were greeted by the crisp Icelandic air and the promise of adventure. The Viking Rafting team, renowned for their expertise and dedication to safety, welcomed us with open arms. As someone who values safety as much as the thrill, I was impressed by their meticulous attention to detail. Our guide, Mark, with his infectious English humor, made sure we were well-prepared for the rapids ahead.

Conquering the Beast

The East Glacial River is not for the faint-hearted. With its relentless class III/IV rapids, it demands respect and skill. But with the Viking Rafting team by our side, even the most inexperienced paddlers can conquer the Beast. Clad in our drysuits, caps, and gloves, we were ready to face the icy waters. The gear was top-notch, keeping us warm and comfortable as we navigated the churning rapids.

The river’s deep canyon scenery was nothing short of spectacular. As we paddled through the heart-pounding whitewater, the adrenaline coursing through my veins was matched only by the awe-inspiring beauty surrounding us. Each rapid was a new challenge, a test of our teamwork and resolve. And with every successful maneuver, our confidence grew, fueled by the encouragement and expertise of our guides.

A Feast for the Senses

After an exhilarating day on the river, we were treated to a meal that was as memorable as the rafting itself. The quality and sustainability of the food were evident in every bite, a testament to the skill and dedication of the cooks. It was, without a doubt, the best meal we had during our time in Iceland.

As a memento of our adventure, we purchased handmade socks and toboggans crafted by the Nepalese family members of the raft guides. These beautifully made goods were a perfect way to support the extended Viking Rafting family and take a piece of Iceland home with us.

Reflecting on our journey, I can confidently say that the East Glacial River rafting experience is a must for anyone seeking adventure in Iceland. The combination of thrilling rapids, stunning scenery, and exceptional service makes it an excursion of a lifetime. I can’t wait to return and tackle the Beast once more.
