- Neptune Square - Established in 1564 to showcase the statue of Neptune, from which it derives its name, the square was created by expanding the area between Palazzo d’Accursio and Palazzo del Podestà, following the demolition of a block of buildings.
The Neptune statue was crafted between 1563 and 1567 by the Flemish sculptor Jean de Boulogne, known as Giambologna, and Tommaso Laureti, known as Il Siciliano.
On one side of the square is the Sala Borsa, which has been the Multimedia Civic Library since 2001, and on the other, adjacent to Palazzo del Podestà, stands Palazzo Re Enzo.
- Basilica di San Petronio - The Basilica of San Petronio, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, is located in Piazza Maggiore and is the largest and most significant church in Bologna.
Construction began in 1390 under the guidance of Antonio di Vincenzo. In 1514, Arduino degli Arriguzzi proposed a new Latin cross design that would have surpassed the size of the church of San Pietro in Rome, but, according to legend, Pius IV halted its construction by promoting the works for the Archiginnasio.
Renowned is the Musical Chapel of San Petronio, the oldest musical institution in Bologna (1436), whose most prestigious feature is a still-functioning organ, built around 1470 by Lorenzo da Prato, and is the oldest in the world still in use.
- Quadrilatero - A truly unique journey is the one that leads you through the streets of Bologna’s ancient market, the Quadrilatero. This district has housed most of the city’s artisan guilds since the Middle Ages and remains one of the most characteristic places in Bologna today.
- Piazza Santo Stefano - Piazza Santo Stefano is one of Bologna’s iconic locations, often considered a square, although it is actually an expansion originating from Via Santo Stefano and leading to the namesake complex, also known as “Seven Churches.”
Dominated by the Basilica of Santo Stefano, the square features the Berti house, Palazzo Isolani, and Palazzo Bolognini Isolani on one side, and the sixteenth-century Palazzo Bolognini Amorini Salina on the other.
- Santuario di Madonna di San Luca - The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca (San Lócca in Bolognese) is a basilica dedicated to the Catholic Marian cult, situated on the Colle della Guardia, a partially wooded spur at 280 m a.s.l. southwest of Bologna’s historic center. It is a significant sanctuary in the city’s history, serving as a pilgrimage destination to venerate the icon of the Virgin and Child known as “di San Luca.” The sanctuary is accessible from Porta Saragozza via a long and distinctive arcaded road, which crosses via Saragozza with the monumental Arco del Meloncello (1732) and then ascends steeply to the sanctuary.
