Venice Walking Tour: Discover Commissario Brunetti's World from Donna Leon's Novels

Embark on a Venice walking tour to explore the captivating world of Commissario Brunetti from Donna Leon’s novels. Discover the hidden locations and film scenes that bring the beloved character to life.

Duration: 2 hours
Cancellation: 24 hours
Highlights
  • Cannaregio - We will start at the Brunetti’s house door. The Brunetti family came and went through this front door, which every Brunetti fan can recognize, once you found it!
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena - The headquarters of the radical animal protection organization Angelo Animale are located in this palazzo. Two masked figures flee from the side entrance and chase each other with the Commissario and his colleagues. While one of the two escapes, the other is caught and, to Brunetti’s amazement, turns out to be his daughter Chiara.
  • Strada Nova - in this bar Signora Gismondi, the neighbour of the unpopular Signora Battestini, enjoys the last two balls of chocolate ice cream of her life.
  • Cannaregio - After the Commissario has realized that his daughter is a member of the radical animal protection organization Angelo Animale, the two have a discussion in this pub. Due to the murder of Professor Nava, who was formerly employed in the slaughterhouse, Chiara’s so-called animal angels are now the focus of the investigation.
  • Rosa Salva - SS. Giovanni e Paolo - In this bar Vice-Questore Patta used to eat a couple of glasses of grappa too much in this bar. But Vianello also appreciates the bar because of the best café in town and the delicious croissants. The inspector treats himself to a panino prosciutto or a tramezzino with ham and artichoke with a glass of white wine
  • Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo (San Zanipolo) - This is where Signora Maria’s kiosk is located. She is well informed about the residents of your neighborhood and shows Brunetti the way to the American archaeologist Brett Lynch straight away.
  • Chiesa di San Francesco della Vigna - The tour ends in a place that we cannot miss. We reach the striking columned hall in a campo, through which the employees, visitors or delinquents in the films hurry to the Questura with the famous green door and a portal

Additional Information

Embark on a city tour to visit the settings of your favorite TV series and immerse yourself in the world of Commissario Brunetti, as depicted in Donna Leon’s novels and their film versions. Along the journey, you’ll gain extensive knowledge about Venice! The imaginary Venetian ‘Commissario Brunetti’ has been a popular figure for years. Experience firsthand the stunning film location sites from Donna Leon’s narratives. Tracking down the “campos” and “palazzos” where Brunetti frequently appears is not an easy task, as they are usually away from the city’s famous landmarks and popular tourist attractions. On the contrary, the films are predominantly shot in a Venice that’s more off the beaten track, such as the Questura. The joy of discovering the locations you’ve imagined while watching TV or reading the books, from Brunetti’s initial cases like ‘Acqua Alta’, through ‘Beastly things’ or ‘Suffer the little children’, to the latest, where Raffi and Chiara no longer wish to reside in Venice, is truly delightful.

  • On certain dates, most travelers staying outside of Venice who are planning to visit for the day will be required to pay a €5 access fee. For further details (including exemptions) and to learn what days this fee is applicable, please visit: https://cda.ve.it

Local guide with a huge wealth of knowledge - That was a great tour through the world of Brunetti and Co.! Valerio speaks a very intelligent German and can really answer any question, even beyond the detective novels. He is from Venice and a bubbly treasure of local knowledge! Highly recommended!

A different view of Venice - I spent last September on a two week art tour in Venice, and on this trip did a lot of art Biannale things, so my Donna Leon walking tour with Valerio showed me a different side of Venice. It’s been a while since I’ve read the books, and if you are a huge fan with places in them you’d like to see, mention those specifically. I just enjoyed various scenes from various books and Valerio’s enthusiasm.

A great tour! - A great tour, was a lot of fun and was very informative. Again and again episodes from the films were mentioned, where what was filmed. Of course, it is not possible to show all locations from the film adaptations. We moved beyond the usual tourist paths, as well as the restaurant tips.

Top Guide not only to Brunetti - Very authentic, competent and entertaining. As a local, Valerio knows a lot of local history and is a good guide away from the tourist crowds. You can feel his love for his homeland and his joy in his job. I'd be happy to come back!

Fantastic tour in Venice - We had the pleasure of booking the "Venice: Walking Tour in the Footsteps of Commissario Brunetti" tour and it was an unforgettable experience! Our guide Valerio was just great - super nice and one of the best guides we've ever had. He incorporated the Brunetti theme perfectly into the tour and also told us lots of interesting facts about Venice. Although I'm not a huge Brunetti fan myself and booked the tour mainly for my parents, who are huge fans, I didn't have a single second of boredom. In fact, I enjoyed the tour just as much as they did! Valerio took us to beautiful places and the whole tour was just brilliant. It was a joy to see how much my parents got into the tour. If you're in Venice, I can only recommend this tour. Whether you're a Brunetti fan or not - you won't regret it!

Great tour with a very pleasant guide - Relaxed and very nice individual tour. Valerio is very attentive and takes everyone in the group into account. I am convinced that no tour on the same topic is the same. You could definitely take part in the same tour several times, the common thread would be there (routes, dates...) but it would still be very different in terms of spontaneity and the most varied things. What is also great is that he doesn't do larger groups (15, 20, 30) as contact and flexibility are lost - his exact words.

A few tips, but it was still nice 👍 - It was very nice, but it would perhaps be good if you could show photos from the film for each location... Or show a few more locations and explain in which film each location is shown! Still highly recommended, you have to try it out 👍😃
